Unit shows high coin but is a rusty bottlecap or crowncap....how can I tell before digging...any tips appreciated....Dan

Basically, you can't. Rusty metal almost always reads high. Especially small, thin pieces.

John E. has an answer for everything...if he won't touch this...definetly a rusted cap grabber with the big coil....Dan

1.Try checking the target with the tip of the DD coil and see what the bottlecap reads there.
2. After pinpointing you might also try raising the DD coil higher and higher while swinging it side to side.
Most times the high coin signal will change to a low tone when raising the coil.
Once you hear that low tone, even once, chances are it's not a coin.

Swing in multiple directions, make sure you get the same repeatable tone
