Ace 350 frustration

I am new to the 350. I have taken it out on two long hunts. In studying this machine I thought I had read that it distinguished the difference between bottle caps and coins well. That has not been my experience so far. It seems every solid dime signal I get is a bottlecap. Strong signals from all sides. I am trying to dig most things just to get used to the machine, but am getting very frustrated with not being able to tell bottle caps from coins. I also when hunting in coins mode seem to only get one tone on targets. Is that the way it is? I thought this was a 3 tone machine. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

When I'm hunting, I have to have the 350 in jewelry mode to be able to tell a bottle cap from a coin. When you find a good signal, wiggle the coil over it in short motions and pull the coil toward you. If it is a bottle cap, you will get bell tones, and then a low tone. The low tone is the giveaway. I'm still tricked from time to time, and do dig the occasional bottle cap though. In coin mode, you only get 2 tones. A mid tone for nickels, and a bell tone for other coins. It takes a little getting used to, but give it time. After you learn it, you will really like it!

DD coils are bottlecap magnets.....I never dig bottlecaps with a concentric coil.

Bob....................I've been there.....Got a 350 as my first machine....A learning experience for sure.....When you hit a target wiggle it over it and bring it too you....You will hear a dull tone when it comes off the target if it's a cap in most cases......You will have to play with it like I did and ask on here for advice......But a dime--quarter etc will give you the bell tone hit......Also pennies do it on mine which is a bit frustrating but just how it is......I used to miss a lot of nickels but it's really very good at hitting them in coin mode......Hits next to pull tab......I have had mine about 6 months 3 of those months being the heart of winter and still have not explored many of the options other than coins-jewelry......Hang in there my friend and you will get it.....I have found around 40.00 in change and a few interesting pieces.....Waiting for a ring etc to pop out some time........Good luck Dave in

Thanks for the good info. I love my 350; not digging so many bottle caps and finding more nickles would be great.

Like one said, a "bouncer" signal is often a giveway. By bouncer, I mean it ID's both high
and low. The low tone is usually the steel, and the high tones are often off the rust.
Coins will be stable and never jump to low tones as long as nothing is close to them.
You will also notice after a while that actual coins will have a slightly different sound
and feel to them. A bit sharper, and no ID jumping.
When you go to coin mode, you are notching the low tabs, so that's why you hear
only bell tones. Not sure about nickles on those.. Might be a mid tone instead of
the high bell tone on those. But what you hear is normal.
BTW, detecting in coin mode might make it harder to tell bottle caps. In coin mode,
you won't be able to hear the tell tale low tone as it will be masked by the notch.
One thing about the Ace machines. The ID and notching are audio only. The
machine itself is actually all metal, all the time. If you notch tabs, all you are doing
is turning off the audio to those tabs. So you won't hear em, but you will still see
the low hits on the display. So if you are in coin mode, and are on a target that
bell tones, but you see a visual jump to the low tabs, may well be one of those
pesky bottle caps, or other rusty iron. So watch the display even if you are notching
some of the tabs.

I use a 350 and dig more bottle caps than all other targets combined. Thus, I just ordered an ETRAC. Waiting for it to arrive.

The 350 loves dimes, pennies and bottle caps. I will try the advice given in this thread.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Ive found mine loves deep crumpled aluminum cans also brings up dime quarter every time. I just remove them for the next time i hunt the area.

This is what I do when I get a signal that says it's a quarter.
For bottlecaps try raising the coil once you are sure the target is directly under it.
Do not go into pinpoint mode but keep it in the search mode without pressing any buttons.
Keep moving the coil side to side in short swings, maybe a couple of inches either
side of center. When you have the coil close to the ground you will hear the bell tone
in both directions. Now start raising the coil slowly as you keep making that short
side to side swing. Somewhere along the line as you you lift and swing you will hear
a bell tone one way and a low tone the other way. That will not be a quarter.
A quarter should give you a bell tone both directions as you raise the coil.
And a quarter will bell tone both directions as you raise the coil higher and higher.
That's the way I do it anyway. I hunt either the jewelry mode or the zero mode.

I discovered this before I saw the low tone off the toe of the coil method posted,
which works well too by the way.

I feel your frustration as I once thought just like you do. Try this out and see if it will work
for you. I try all kinds of things myself and keep using what works for me. That's what I
feel is the most important thing, what works for me.

Good hunting to you Bob !
