Ace 250

I have read a lot about the Ace 250 and it sounds like an incredible piece of machinery. My bother owns one and simply loves it.

Yeah and all those reasons and more equate to owning one. All of us oldtimers with a closet full of high-dollar machines are using the 250 while the high-dollar machines collect cobwebs. There's a message in there somewhere.

"I have read a lot about the Ace 250 and it sounds like an incredible piece of machinery. My brother owns one and simply loves it."

For good reason.

"There are only two things holding me back from owning one, lack of locking couplings on the shaft and a switch to change from Multi Tone ID to single tone."

Let me address the locking collar thing this way: Big deal! I wish they were there, too. But hey, Ive used machines without them before and it really is No Big Deal. Wrap a little electrical tape on the inner rod if it bugs you.

As for the multi tone ID, the Ace 250 has them; three of them to be precise:

Low one for iron/foil
Mid one for nicks/tabs
High one for coins/silver

That's about all you need, anyway

"If it wasn

You could plug a litlle light at the place of the earphones. my friend is deaf and bought that and he is very satisfied. You know what i mean Uncle willy I'm sure you heard about it???

I am sorry that you cannot hear the tones from the Ace. I expect you used your brothers unit to learn that little fact.

It really is of little use if you cant hear a thing from the little Ace. I suppose there is some genius who could help you, but why not chew on this: Call Garrett. Talk to Mary and all the other helpful folks there. Perhaps they would be willing to make the subtle changes for your needs. You never know...

As to the collar lock, well, I agree, with a little ingenuity, a collar could be fitted to the Ace with little more than a bit of shop time and a few simple tools.

I do admire your adherence to a higher standard and you have surely benefitted from it in life. And I also feel that you could make a little headway with the Ace if you accepted it as is - and got out in the field with it for 20-30 hours. However, before you could accept my "It Aint No Big Deal Challenge", you'd have to resolve the audio issues.

There is nothing perfect in this big old world and sometimes we have to either accept what is at hand, undertake an improvement program or leave well enough alone. Sometimes all that is needed is the wisdom to know the difference.

Hey Dirtdigger, I don't know if you know about it or not, but there are some aftermarket Vibration Attachments, that are available to metal detectorists. As a matter of fact, if you go to the Sov-Excal
Forum, and scroll down to any posts by Rick(ND), send him an e-mail, and tell him NamVetLesTreasureSeeker referred you. I know he has a hearing deficiency, and I am pretty sure he told me, that he uses one, and it works for him. He is also a detector dealer, and if he can't get you one, he can probably refer you to a dealer, that has them.
Hope this helps you, hh.

Yeah I've known guys who were either deaf or tone deaf who had the audio connected to a light or two different colored lights for multi-tone.

One fellow I met is stone deaf and has the audio wired through a rheostat to a green light on the display panel. It comes on when a target is encountered and grows brighter as the target is centered.

I'd contact Garrett and see if they can improvise a modification for you. I would think they'd be happy to give it a try.

Thanks for the great tips guys but I think the tone problem is solved.
I talked to a friend of mine today who is an electronic tec. also a Metal Detector Dealer. He said it can be done by installing a variable resistor that changes the impedance (whatever that is) that will change the tone.

All I have to do is turn the dial till I can hear all three tones. He said he has done it before, this guy is a wizard when it comes to electronics.

Ideally he would like to install the knob in the same location as the earphone jack but on the other side, if there is room. He also said he can hook the variable resistor up temporary and we can play with it till I can hear all three tones. Then measure the impedance and then solder a fixed resistor of that value inside the unit so I wont have to put any holes in the unit and no knob to fool with.

Thanks for all the help guy but I think things are under control.

...good answer. There is no place opposite the headphone jack as that is where the coil connector is. However, inside the battery compartment is room for a trimmer pot, if your boy is as clever as you say he is. Inside the compartment is a good place for it, too, as you wouldnt need to be adjusting it all the time, so once you set it -you could forget it.

Have him look at a trimmer pot installation in that location.
Personally, I'd call Garrett and tell them what I said. :)
