Ace 250 with 8.5"x11" coil - weird pinpoint problem?

Hi guys. My first post here. I have a Garrett Ace 250 and typically I use my 9x12" concentric, and I love it. Pinpointing works great, and I get superb depth in my soil conditions. So I then purchased a used (excellent condition on the outside), Garrett 8.5" x 11" DD ProFormance coil. Well, here in Connecticut we are still under snow, so I could not get out and do any "real" hunting, but here is a weird problem that I'm seeing. I went to my basement, on concrete floor. Placed a nickle, dime, quarter and penny on the floor. Detector finds them with each pass no problem, and then I can move the DD coil off to the side, press the pinpoint button, and roll over the coin targets and get a very strong, central strip (hot) signal to pinpoint. No issues there. The problem is when I try to move over to a small iron metal, like an old square nail, or iron buckle. I can detect it with the DD coil on the concrete floor no problem, but the issue is that when I move the coil to the side, press the pinpoint button, and then move over the iron target, I only get a pinpoint signal off the sides of the DD coil. The center strip becomes quiet. The total oposite of what happens with coin items. Why would that be? Is it because these are more or less air test? or more to the point, ground tests in close proximity of iron object to the DD coil? I just don't get why, it pinpoints properly down the hot strip center section on coins only, but on iron test objects, it growls on the 9 and 3 o'clock position of the outside of coil, but the center hot strip becomes totally quiet? Do you think that this coil is defective? it is super clean, and does have a cover on it. I took the cover off, and the coil and cover are super clean. What am I missing, other than trying to actually pinpoint an iron object in the soil as opposed to just placing it on the cement floor. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated by this noob. Thank you.

PS. I had no issues using the 9x12 concentric and pinpointing iron properly on the floor. But with the DD, I can only do coins, but not iron objects... The center strip turns quiet when
going over iron items in Pinpoint mode.... Weird..

Thanks !

This is what you can expect with iron and a DD coil....they often pinpoint off to the side. It is especially noticeable on nails and wire because of their shape....not round.
Iron tends to null in the sweet spot. If you raise the coil a couple of inches it should pinpoint on the sweet spot. Doesn't help you with targets buried in the ground but if it comes in as iron this is what you can expect. When the iron corrodes and develops a halo they will mimic a coin. Part of the learning curve.

When I pinpoint with DD coils, I raise the coil about 12" off the ground, then try to find the center using the audio. The concentric coil is much easier to pinpoint with, and I also prefer to use it over a DD coil.

Thank you guys for some insight... I will try the tips with the new DD coil.... But, I might go back to my 9x12 concentric. I just love it that much and like you said, pinpointing is solid. Also, I know the new Ace 300 and Ace 400 are coming out, but I could not pass getting a super deal on a brand new Ace 350 from EBay. Got it for $228 !!! Now, that was a great deal, so now I will have both. My trusted 250 for coins mostly, and 350 for more relic and coin hunting. I will be able to bring both on my hunts and let my dad, or even my 6 year old use it with the small coil. Still thinking about getting an additional 9x12 concentric for my new Ace 350 ... But I will give the DD a few more hunts/hours to see how well it can do. My soil is perfect in CT. Ground mineralization is wicked low, so I can run the 250 with 9x12 at 2 -1 bar from max and not ever get any false signals. The depth on the 9x12 with iron is superb. Well over 12" most times, and coins as well. Close to 10-12 easily..... Thank you again, for your advice guys !

Hope you didn't buy a counterfeit 350. Most of the ones on ebay being sold for less than Garrett dealers charge are cheap chinese knockoffs. You have to be careful with to good to be true deals on ebay.

True... Seems to be a part of 8 unit overstock? Who knows. It was listed as NEW, but you are right.... How would I know if it was a fake and not genuine Garrett? Now you got me all nervous... There is a 14 days return policy. So how can I find out it the unit is the real thing and not a knock off? I've heard of the Garrett Pinpointers being knock offs sometimes, but not the entire, boxed detectors.... Should I look at the serial number, call Garrett and ask them to see what they think?

Definately call Garret and check out who the seller is.
As they often say and I quote. If it sounds too good to be true , it often is!
You have to ask yourself why would a reputable dealer sell something at a loss?
They could be stolen if they aren't counterfeit. I recall seeing a tv program about thieves stealing cargo from 18 wheelers....more common than you think.
Often the articles are sold on ebay.
This thread needs to be relisted as it has morfed into something other than pinpointing proglems.
