Ace 250 vs x-terra 50

LD in KS

New member
Soon I'm going to buy another detector to go along with my Minelab Sovereign XS pro. I have been reading the various forums about the new Ace 250 and the X-Terra 50. Have read several reports about the depth of the 50, but haven't seen much on the 250. Maybe someone can comment on the two machines? I do like the fact that the 250 has the different coils available now.
I have owned a Garrett GTA1250. It had several nice features that I liked but, it never seemed to have the depth of my Minelab.
Any comments will be appreciated.

What will you be using it for?
Coins or relics?

The ace is great on coins up to 8" if conditions are right
it will get 6"-"8 all the time...for me anyway
It is a Tone detector, 3 tones. It has ID
I have done some relic hunting....
And a meter would be nice...Thing show in a broad rang
on the ace. It will show in 1 of 12 sections or ID

The 50 has ID and Meter, better for relics.
It has a meter up to 40? I'm thinking...Compared to 12 on the ace.
That is where relic hunting will help.
And I'd say it has better depth.

I know what one is cheaper......Ace..

Hi LD
Not sure what your looking for out of the second detector, but I don't think that either one is going to match the XS-Pro for depth.
If your after a TID, you might want to consider just adding a meter to it. If your looking for a lightweight detector, then you will need to consider whether or not you need a machine that you can ground balance. If that is not needed, then to be honest,at the moment I would go for the ace250.(I swing an X-terra30). For the simple reason, you can a 12inch coil for more depth (I'll let the guys here comment on that) you can get the small coil, to get into all those tight spots(and close to play equipment) and you can now get an in line probe for it. The X-terra's can provide none of these at the moment.
I hope this helps.
Mick Evans.

The ACE 250 will hold it's own against the X-Terra 50. There have already been comparison tests done. The Sniper coil on the ACE 250 is a killer around metal equipment and trashy areas. The large 9" x 12" is a killer on beaches, hunted out parks and relic hunts in both sensitivity and depth. However.....the choice is yours. Good luck....

I read so many positive post about the Ace-250 and the 3 different size coils, so I got the pro package $376.80 that's with the 3 coils & covers, and I have had more fun and enjoyment with this detector.

I have one water detector + two other top of the line, which are great detectors, but ever since I got the Ace 250 that is all I use.
It has to be the easiest producing detector I have ever hunted with and like John says, metal detecting is suppose to be fun,and the 250 is a fun machine. HH, Bernie

Hi again LD.
One other thing you might want to consider if depth is your primary goal.If your after a light simple detector, have you considered the Musky! It may not offer you with as much target information, but what it does have is, a selection of DD coils. While the X-terra's and the Ace can punch down a respectful distance; being concentric coils they only do it in a very small area, as mentioned by Bill I think; the DDs can punch down with a much wider signal.Probably explains why Explorers don't leave to much behind(except via masking etc.). Also they don't take any time to recover from masking.
Just a few thoughts to keep an open mind about.
Mick Evans.

Musky has none of these. It does have a DD coil, which can under certain conditions can be of an advantage. Concentric coils give better ID information for discrimination purposes. The Musky is terrible for coins, especially for clad. It won't read one and two dollar coins in Canada at all. It loves bottle caps as do most DD's. It's OK for a relic machine, but there are lots of machines that will out perform the Musky as far as depth goes, including the ACE 250 with the large coil. Comparing these two machines is like comparing apples and oranges, and the original question didn't even ask for any information about the Minelab Advantage. I do own an Advantage, and haven't used it for over a year. It just doesn't excel in any one particular area for my hunting needs, so I just keep it for a spare. The higher Garrett machines have the advantage to size an object prior to digging, which makes them well suited for coin and jewellery hunting, as well as relic hunting.

Hi John.
It's always a pleasure to read your posts. In trying to be helpful I ended up being much better educated. Didn't know about bottle tops and DD coils before. Keep up the good posts.
Mick Evans.
