Ace 250: Two Hundred Coins Later

I finally find something worth keeping that isn't a coin :poke:

I found what i believe is a musket ball last week and found a watch this week, not great finds but better than my usual coins :cheekkiss:

Alright buddy!:clapping:Nice finds!:thumbup:Cool musket ball!:super:I wonder how old it is? Anyway, glad to see you're enjoying that Ace 250!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Sure is a clean musket ball. I have only seen them with the white patina lead gets. Maybe it has something to do with your soil. In the one pic, it has green stuff growing on it - uncommon for lead. Are you sure it is lead?

And its 25mm in diameter - that's 1" and is a very big bore for a musket! Talk about recoil... :stars:
A one inch bore is more like a shotgun, although it would be a monster: 4 or 5 guage, unless my memory fails!

Most muskets that fired round ball were .60 to .75 inch. It wasn't uncommon for cannister or grapeshot to be used on the field, though, so that is a possibility. See the little indentations around its surface? That would be seen on fired shot from a smoothbore, I would think. Was there any military activity in your area, involving mass troops?

The metal detecting world is full of mysteries.

Great finds. Conratulations... That IS a large looking musket ball
Maybe something out of an old machine of some type??
Just guessin anyway keep finding the good stuff

Ron

I think it is from one of those "cluster shells". It has multiple indents in it so it may be from other balls hitting into each other upon detenation. I believe they had those mini balls in those shell and it did great damage to troops. I would check for more in that area where you found that one.

Good hunting

Don

Thanks for the info guys, ye i have this place all to myself, i'm gonna cover the area with the Ace then might try get a detector with more depth

Yeah, we could draw some conclusions.

I found a lead ball,,,almost a duplicate of yours. Ive been thinking ,maybe it is a slug from a shotgun??? I want mine to be a musket ball too,but my alter ego is whispering slug to me.

it is the right size 4 a canister ball from a12 pound er . the dips all over it is where the ones around it pressed against it i believe, but canister balls tend to be iron. need more info of location . was this in cw area?
