I have a white gold wedding band and my 250 reads it between a tab and a nickel.....i'm just learning this thing, so here is a dumb question.....if I am in coin only mode, will I miss all gold rings? or will some still show up.....that beach sure does have a lot of tabs /.................................

You'll miss any that fall in the notched out range. Thus the name, "Coins," mode.

Some people who are really keen to find jewelry, notch out everything BUT the midrange. They are willing to eschew nickels and comparatively worthless clad coins for a shot at high value gold jewelry. Yes they get a lot of junk - but they don't miss many gold items, either.

It's a fact of life that jewelry masquerades as junk most of the time. You need to know what your odds are of finding a given thing and then play those odds.
In trashy picnic areas, miles from the shore, you may want to run in coins mode. At the beach? Never.

You will hit every one of them but they will read all over the scale ( mostly low ) depending on composition. Some will read at foil or pulltab. You have to dig some junk to get the nice rings Sadly gold has the same conductivity as junk and foil.

you"ll miss quite a few most of the gold i"v found has come in at the foil-5c-pull tab range with some small deep gold bouncing between iron-foil-5c & some of the bigger hitting solid pull tab if you are serious about gold you"ll have to dig everything above iron.

I run my ACE in Jewely Mode all the time... I have found gold from the foil range ann the way up to the Penny/dime range. The closer to the foil range the higher the Karat. 10 K gold has more copper that say 14 K gold. So it will ring up like a penny! Hope this helps.

Sometimes when I run in the Coins mode, I'll add the notch just before the nickel icon (foil). Since the Ace is adjustable in any mode, and I want to increase my chances for rings, I'll just add this to give me another chance at rings if I'm in a tab-infested area.

I would not hunt in coin mode at the beach you will be missing alot of good targets. I hunt in all metal most of time unless there is so much iron i can not take all the dinging then i switch to jewerly mode. As far as pull tabs a modern tab is what we have now and it will read one notch under a nickel if it is broken in half it will read as a nickel. A pull tab 25 years ago which is a ring and a beaver tail will read as a true pull tab and you should dig everyone one of them because it could be a ring but it could be a pull tab. The more you use your detector the better you will get but not by what the screen says it is but the sounds it makes. Then you will know what to dig and not to dig.
