Ace 250 Question

I'm having alot of falsing with my Ace. I'm about ready to send it back. Any suggestions before I do? I'm almost convinced the coil isn't right.

HDJ ...............Thanks

Jim,
For starters, make sure all visible connections are good, batteries are good and sens is at 3 bars. If it works better, then maybe go to 4 bars. The coil wire as it leaves the coil needs to be on top of the rod, straight up, and secured at about 12" from the coil. (tape or wire tie) Then go the rest of the way up winding around the rod and have minimal, but sufficient slack.

I will sure give that a try. I didn't know about the coil wire needing to be striaght 12 inches up

Would you recommend that same set up for all Garrett metal detectors - like the 1350?

Good question. I'm thinkin about buying that 1500 model. :detecting:

Thanks Larry. I went out this morning and it did help stop the falsing.

I noticed that the depth isn't right tho. I read 4 - 2 inches and the coins are right on the top.

Any thought's on the depth reading?

And Thanks agian Larry, you have saved me alot of time.

Yeah. Mine also.

BB,
Don't know about the 1350. Bill (Ore) is the one who got me the info for the 250. He more than likely could give you a good answer on the 1350.

:jump: Dang I don't use a Garrett, just ordered the Ace 250 for my son to begin on,allot of good reviews.

I am a Fisher man myself C$S and CZ70 Pro. The problem with Coins sitting on top of the ground causing a false reading on depth is normal this happens with other machines and is quite common.

For it to read correctly the coin has to be in the ground, just realize this happens. If it reads ok on buried coins 1",2" 3" 4" down don't worry about it. But if it reads off on buried coins I would have it looked at by Garrett.

Good detecting to you

What do you have your sensitivity set at? DRop it down to four bars. Make sure the cable is snug and the first wrap going over the top of the shaft. Raise the coil up off the ground when scanning and slow down till you get it all figured out.

:twodetecting: I see allot of questions posted about sensitivity. The truth is the ground that you are hunting in is the limiting factor for Sensitivity settings.

When guys are new to detecting they don't know this. General rule of thumb, turn up sens till detector chatters then back it down in small amounts to the point where the detector becomes stable re ground balancing after each adjustment( this is for detectors that you can manual ground bal, or reset auto trak balancing). On the Ace 250 the ground balance part does not apply it has a pre set GB from the factory.

Also some detectors will false at the outer edge of the swing pattern if the person lifts the coil up at the end of his swing pattern, try to stay flat and consistent with swing pattern just above the ground. Scuffing the coil hard on the ground,to high sens, bad ground balance on detector, mineralized ground, and hot rocks all can cause falsing.

Take care all

Yup, just as everyone else says, reduce your sensitivity and tape your coil lead to the bottom shaft for 12" or so. I just cable tied mine every 4" so it doesn't jiggle around.

Doesanyone have an aswer to the ghosting in poipoint mode, you know the tone that will just not go away? Luv the machine but everyonce in a while this pinpoint overload thingy drives me nuts, have I just walked away form a cache of silver coins or just hot soil? The few times that I have dug it nothing except a bit of rust.

I've had my ACE 250 about two months and haven't had any problem with falsing. I didn't tape the coil wire as suggested but do have it lapped over the top the first turn. I go out right at daylight and have noticed that high wet gress sometimes acts much like water and I have to adjust my sensitivity way down to stop the chatter. I also get false depth readings when the coin is on top of the ground. When it is indicating a coin and bounces all over the place with a strong signal I would bet my life the coin is on top of the ground and if I look close I always find it. This is good as I know what the machine is telling me. I have found more nickels with this machine than any other I have ever tried. If you will noticed the nickel icon has two bar under it. When it locks up on the rt hand bar and doesn't waver, 99% of the time it is a nickel, 1% will be a pulltab. For pure coin shooting I prefer it to my GTI 2500! JIM
