ace 250 question

I bought a new ace 250 a couple of weeks ago. I have found quite a few coins with it and have been impressed with its depth in comparison with my buddys 1500 garrett. I'm not sure where I got the idea for this system, but I have been having problems with digging too much trash. I have tried a new system and am wondering if the results I'm having has to do with my detector or is it just common knowhow that I never knew.
When it hits a signal in the coin mode and it reads somewhere around a penny or dime I then put in the all metal mode and the sound is completly different and will (if its trash)read lower in the scale. If it reads about the same as in the coin mode then it's usally a coin.
Have is struck upon something unusal or is this common knowledge or something that has to do with my 250.

Putting it in all metal is the same as punching pinpoint.
