Ace 250 & mode

I'm curious as to what mode you all hunt in & why. Try & be as detailed & specific as you can please. I mostly coin-shoot, and hunt in either coin mode, or all-metal if I'm in a spot that might hold relics.

Does your mode (or discrimination) change depending on your choice of coil size? I'm still learning the ins & outs of my 250, and want to maximize the MD to it's fullest potential.

Thanks
Smitty

I hunt in jewelry mode most of the time. The old houses I MD around have too many nails to hunt in all metal. I want all the coins and jewelry I can get. I will put up with digging trash.

Smitty:

I almost always hunt in ALL METAL or RELIC, even if I am coin shooting. Even with the fast response of the ACE, you can miss a coin that is near a junk item if you are in any other mode. Most users use more discrimination when working in trashy areas, but I do just the opposite. When a good target is near junk, the machine may not recover in time, causing a jumpy signal, or just signal that is discriminated out. I would rather deal with a lot of low tones than risk missing a nice Barber or Seated coin. Just my opinion.

Hi Smitty,
We both have standard coils and hunt exclusively in jewelry mode.
Like John 'n Wva we want to make sure we don't miss any coins either, up 'till now we've
only done beaches. We really don't mind diggin' the trash as we're always lookin' for the bonus.
I think our total rings for the year came to 28-29 roughly 50% silver 'n' 50% gold.
Hopin' to beat the crap out of that total next year.

Thanks everyone for the replies  So there's more of a difference than between modes than I'd realized. So anyone correct me if I'm wrong....if I were to notch-out the same spots in all modes, there would still be a difference between modes?

I'm curious too, does anyone ever run all-metal, nothing notched-out, and dug every signal? Would this be a proper method say to relic hunt an area if it were fairly devoid of trash?

Thanks

Smitty,
There would be a difference in modes even with the same spot notched out. For example, if you notched out nickels and you were in coin mode you would not get pull tabs or nickels, and yet in All metal mode you would get pull tabs, but still not nickels.

I will tell you how I typically use the ACE 250. In an area void of signals, such as a remote forest I run in ALL METAL mode. I want to find the iron signals because that will tell me where human activity has happened. Once I determine where the iron concentration is I switch to RELIC mode. I will still find large iron such as axe heads and tools, but it will discriminate out (most of) the nails. Some older square head nails will jump from iron to coin. I dig these because sometimes a deep coin can imitate a square head nail.

Always in Jewelry Mode-- It is the closest to all metal mode with all the junk. I run the sens. at 2 bars from the top. Here in Tennessee we have VERY netural soil. On detectors with ground balance I have always been able to use a factory setting. So the Ace 250 works fine. Hope this helps.. Watch the Sens. The 250 will act a little crazy when you pass the max for the area your in... don't worry you will know!!

Like most, I tend to run mine as open as possible for the area..
Usually all metal, unless there are a lot of nails. Then, I might roll
it back a notch if they become a nuisance. But I'm often just as
interested in old iron stuff as I am coins, so I usually run it wide open
in most non trashy areas.
I also like seeing any iron, even if I actually don't intend to dig it.
I run pretty much the same for all the coils.
I have used the coin mode in some trashy areas to speed things up
a tad when looking for only coins, but I don't do that too often as I'm
afraid of missing lower hitting stuff like rings.
