ACE 250 & false readings?

Yesterday,i went to a ball field / play ground. The edge, outside of the fence,is rubble filled. At this area i got false readings! The detector would show 6 to 8 inches.I would dig down and find ,like a pile of small stones.Question is,Does the hollow area,in the stones, register as a find? I quit digging them and that spot.
I did find alot of newer coins. It is also a carneval[sp] site!

I bet a get 5 or 6 false reading per hunt. I get a real good coin signal. I will dig a plug then check the plug and the hole and signal is 100% gone. I have no idea why it happens, but it does. I just replace the plug and continue to hunt.

Hi Willy.
Gravel can cause all sorts of problems to most makes of detectors, so don't get disheartened by it. Try to hunt the same spot, but keep dropping your sensitivity down. Don't go below 3 bars. If that doesn't work, knock out your bottom 3 notches of discrimination. That may help. If it doesn't, you may want to try an easier spot.
Mick Evans.

Sometimes when I get one of these false readings, I will hold down the pinpoint button and scan the area again. Usually, I will then hear what was originally giving the reading. Can I always find it? No, but I'll dig in the dirt another minute or two. It is weird that sometimes you will hear a beep, then once digging begins the signal seemingly disappears. The pinpointing feature will still register even when the beeping won't.

When you loose the signal 100% put your detector in all metal and try again. This happens to me on some 22 casings.

Good advice here. Everyone is sort of hitting around what may be the culprit: "hot rocks"

Much fill rock is igneous, mostly granite of some sort, and has many different mineral mixes. Usually this isnt a problem, but some of them can be conductive and will react to a detectors field, giving you false signals.
The true all metal mode - in pinpoint - is your ally to determine this. Press the pinpoint button and see if the ground tends to swell in response or has a lot of "round" sounding targets. These are distinct from the sharp response of coins and discrete metal objects. If possible, take the recovered stones to a metal free area and see if this is the case.

If so, about all you can do is back down the SENS on the ACE and notch out the lower end, both already suggested by Mick.

Also on a coin hit raise your coil above the ground 12 inches. If you still get a good beep then it's a large target. Probably a aluminum can or large deep rust iron. Then simply pass on that target.

I am sure everyone is right about their reason for fasing. It depends on where you live. With Neil it is bluestone gravel. I haven't figured out what that is yet. In my area it is coke or coal cinders. My falsing hits in the silver area. It is not as sharp as a coin, but if it's deep it all sounds the same. Rusty iron can cause a fasing like affect. When you dig it up you break up the rust and lose the signal you had. Rust will read higher than iron. If you are on coin mode, you lose the signal altogether.

More than once this has happened to me too. I can remember at least three times. Twice I was using my GTI1500 and once my Ace250 with 9 X 12 coil. After getting a good coin signal and digging out the plug to the depth indicated, the signal would be gone. This was so frustrating because I knew I was getting a good coin signal. Even sized right on the GTI. So I put my pinpointer down in the hole and it started vibrating. Each time I found a dime down in the bottom of the hole. Once it was a mercury dime at 6 inches. The moral to this story is, don't give up until you have used your pinpointer down in the hole.
