Ace 250 depth question

Hi all,
I'm new at this fun hobby. I took my 250 out in a wash located in a fairly remote BLM site in southern Arizona. I found a few things (horseshoe, wire, etc. at about 3 inches), but then a got a solid signal that registered over the 8" deep mark on the depth meter. My question is this: What does this mean, Could this target be 8-10-12 or more inches down? How deep could it be? I used full sensitivity and all metal mode. From you experienced people, what could it be out in the middle of nowhere? The pinpoint feature also went max'ed out. I can go back because I marked the place but didn't want to dig myself to China. Not sure what to think. I did contact the BLM office before I went out and they told me it's ok to use the detector as long as I "leave an area the way I found it".
Any help would be appreciated.

The only way to tell for sure is to DIG!! Sounds like a large iron object, though. If you were in a wash it could be something discarded long ago and covered over by water action (it does rain in Ariz., don't it?)Take a shovel and dig it up, probably not deeper than a foot. May be something interesting!!!

Thanks for the responses.
Yes, John, Arizona does have rain. In fact, during July and August is the monsoon season. The washes will fill with torrents of water. Actually dangerous to be in a wash during the monsoons because the mountains flush out into these washes.
Anyway, I'm going out tomorrow and dig up whatever is down there.

Well, I did go back and started to dig the place I marked. Almost 11" down I hit something. I kept digging around the perimeter until I had a hole 3' by 4' and a foot deep. I careful pulled up a square piece of some sort of equipment. I had no idea what it was. It was a metal screen bordered by old oak wood. I took it to the BLM office. The ranger helped me clean it and to my surprise, he told me it was a section of an old sleuth. He said it came from an old gold mine nearly 31/2 miles away. He dated it in the late 1800's because of it's construction. Apparently over the years it was washed down from the mountain and settled where I found it. He asked for it, as a donation, because they are in the process of putting together an exibit of an old mine operation. I negotiated the right to do some detecting near the cochise stronghold which is normally off limits.
I don't know if this was just newbie luck but man am I hooked now. God pray for my TH widow lol.

Yeah you're hooked now. You have my deepest sympathy. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
