tried a test today with my 250. after digging nothing but trash. except two Penny's (i think buy accident mixed with other trash) i buried a new penny 6" tried sen. from 3 to 8 on coin, relics, jewelry. could not get a reading on it. reburied it at 4" and did same test. could not read it. it will read on surfice. tried the same test with a dime. i did get a reading at the 4" mark.which read constantly as a nickel, instead of dime.it did read as a dime when exposed. my question is does a coin need to be buried for along period of time to send off a return signal? with my sen. set at 4 I'm getting return signals at give or take 8" any input would be appreciated. thank you. lee

There has to be something wrong. I get dimes, nickles, pennies at up to 6 inches, quarters 6 to 8 inches. All reads correctly.

Are you getting a lot of falsing? If not try a new set of batteries.

Then try rewraping the coil cable.

If you can't get it to work, call Garrett. They have the best customer service ever.

leland, take a big plug from ground and try not to brake it up, put the dime in at 5" or 6" and put back plug, stomp it hard and see it you get a beep. Flintstone

Freshly buried coins that deep rarely show up. Not sure why, just the nature of the beast.

Metals in the soil, over a period of time, develop a halo of leached material from the metal that your detector will more readily pick up. Moist soil also enhances this effect. You should always do better on deep, older stuff after a nice rain.
