Ace 250 coil question

New member
It seems that in several of the areas I hunt the older coins are down 6" and deeper. I have been able to pluck a few out of the ground with the sens cranked all of the way up however the Ace gets a little erratic at that setting. So I was thinking of picking up one of the larger than stock coils for the 250. Either the 9 x 12 or the 8.5 x 11 DD. So, if anyone has one or both of these I would like to know what your experience has been with them, good or bad. Do you get more depth with either of these? Do these coils change what the ID scale shows, for example a quarter shows up as a dime, etc? Or would I be better off getting a different detector that would be more suitable for these deeper targets? Any comments, help, info is appreciated. Thanks.....

Jeff

I have used the 9x12. It's a weeee bit heavy but gives good depth at
three to four bars. I would not pump up the sensitivity unless you have decent
ground. Youu can also buy a 13 or 14 inch coil at Kelly co. They make bigger coils
for garrett but they are expensive.
Good luck

Thanks Robert2300.........The ground in my area does not "seem" (Northern Illinois) to have much mineralization in it so I feel that is a non factor. My thought was to stick with items made by Garrett. Not saying the other mfg's items are bad but my OCD makes me want to stick with a "factory original", if you know what I mean.
In my original research I was unable to find any graphic illustrations of the search patterns of the 2 coils in question. Since then I have found the graphics on the Garrett web page. As of now I am leaning towards the DD coil. Most of the areas I hunt are not that trash laden but I do like the narrower search area of the DD. So now the question changes a bit. Would the DD coil mentioned give about the same depth as the other coil or am I looking at this all wrong. Again any comments are welcome.

This is a good question you have. If you want the best sorce send a personal Msg. To Edmonton John if he does not know the answer he will find out for you. A lot of others would be interested also.

I have the 9x12. It acts the same as the stock 6.5x9 coil, except it goes at least two inches
deeper on coin size objects. Maybe even three inches in some cases, but an easy two anyway
to be conservative.
I haven't tried the DD coils. Myself, unless there is some specific reason to get the DD, I
would generally prefer the concentric coil. And most performance is linear to size.
In theory, the 9x12 may well go slightly deeper than the 8.5x11 just by being slightly larger.
Another good thing about the 9x12 is it won't miss small targets. I've dug BB's and even
small slivers of metal that the 9x12 hit on.
The ID will be pretty much the same on any Garrett brand coil for the 250.

Thanks NM5K, thats the information I was looking for. The 9 x 12 is the way I'm going to go. I hope to get it ordered in the next day or so. Might have to get a sniper coil while I'm at it.

Good luck with the 9x12 jazzman. You might want to try and back off the sensitivity to 6 or 7 bars. you shouldn't suffer much in the depth dept, but if it's erratic, then you'll be missing out. If it's still a bit erratic, just notch out the bottom 3 notches of discrimination. the Ace seems to suffer the least in recovery speed of all the detectors that I've used, when you use notching. The GTI is not bad either, but it's overall recovery speed is slower than the Ace. there's something to be said for simplicity sometimes.
Mick Evans.

Thanks Mick, I will try what you have suggested. I'm hoping it will get here before the snow flies and the ground freezes.

The best depth I could get with the standard coil is 4-5 inches in ground, (air test is around 9-10" on a quarter). I purchased the 10X 14" accelerator coil and now get over 8" in ground on quarters and found a 1895 brass trade token at around 10 inches. The accelerator air tests 13" on quarters and 13" my gold wedding ring.. (pin pointing takes a little getting used to but not bad)..

If you want to pick up the deeper silver signal coins I would suggest getting the 13 inch ultimate coil for the ace 250. I got mine from kelly co made a huge difference in depth,16-18 inches, you will find silver. Wayne in Delaware
