Ace 250 Bad Search Coil?

As I swing the detector left and right I get a beep when it changes directions even though there are no metal objects near it. I removed the coil from the detector (cable still connected) and when I move it up and down fairly quickly the detector really sounds off. The detector came with a second larger coil and it does the same thing. Is this normal? I have been out of metal detecting for years and just bought the Garrett Ace 250 used on Ebay. I have not had a chance to try it out outside. It was dark and cold when it was delivered yesterday. It just seems odd that an abrupt change in direction would cause it to beep but since both coils do this I guess it is normal?

an abrupt change in direction

The key word being ABRUPT try it not so abrupt, slow it down to warp 3 and ease into the turns:rofl:......make sure the connections are tight and the sensitivity isn't maxed out and see what you get. Fast abrupt turns of the coil may cause the symptoms your describing as will sudden stops against stationary objects such as trees, fire hydrants, houses......ect:thumbup:

I did like the posts said and taped the first 6" lengthways down the first part of the shaft, then started gently winding it around the rest of the shaft. My mistake was that I had not left enough play at the connector and every time I swung the coil, it would pull on the connector and cause a false signal.

You might very well get a beep at the end of your swings, especially if you are arcing the swings left to right and raising the coil at the end of the swings. The coil could be sensing a change from the mineralized matrix (soil) to the air, and giving off a beep. Try swinging the coil parallel to the ground, keep it level at the end of the swing. Also, you might try lowing the sensitivity if the just mentioned suggestions don't work. The other causes below might also be the culprit.

Good luck.....hope it works well for you and you didn't get a baddy off of Ebay.
