ace 150 pin pointing?

having problems locating detected objects without making large holes. this is a new detector for my son i guess i made a mistake not getting the 250 after reading the posts on here.i had a whites detector when i was a kid (70's) and they sure have changed "no constant tone over an object with the ace 150 like i had with the old bfo detector " so any help is appreciated. i am very pleased with the sensitivity " a push pin at over 3 inches in all metal mode UNREAL!" thanks again

Sweep slow over the target. Note the vertical line where it beeps. Then sweep the target 90 degrees from that and note the vertical line. Right where the two lines intersect is where to dig.

I would advise any one to spend the extra 80 bucks and get a 250. The pinpoint feature gets rid of a lot of guess work and makes retrieval easier. IMHO

Yeah we've come a long way from the old "motorboat" BFO's. You shoulda got the 250 just for the pinpoint feature alone. The 250 is tricky to pinpoint with even with the pinpoint feature. I haven't used the 150 so can't help you out. Guess I'll have to have Garrett send me one to play with so I can help 150 users out.

Here's how I do it with the 250-BTW -the reason I'm doing this is to get ready for speed and competition hunts using my 250. The fact that the Ace works well as you speed the coil up has made me decide to give it a trial. First, you need to take something like white out for typing corrections and highlight the half circle area where the pinpoint is. Using the "X" method pinpointing as mentioned by the previous replier, with the coil raised about 4-5" is the correct and "best" way for normal th'ing. I, however raise the coil and just use the right to left sweep- I find the left to right signal that is strongest after several sweeps, then on the next sweep I slightly lower the coil, slow the sweep down, watching the little white pinpoint arch(that I've highlighted), and the instant the signal comes I "freeze" my eyes on that point, letting the coil pass by with my eyes frozen on the ground. Sometimes I leave my eye there and on a return sweep double check this point. This seems like a long procedure, but after a while it is really fast. I have actually pinpointed on the second sweep after getting the first hit on the first sweep. Approximately 10-15 years ago I won a speed hunt doing this. I was in the third and final hunt field and finished while everyone was STILL in the first field. I was using a Freedom III and didn't even bother to hit the pinpoint trigger. It just takes a little practice-and I'm sure you just want to enjoy your time without speed or time being considered. BTW, I forgot to mention that highlighting the pinpoint makes it much easier, as the black coil is kinda a blur when trying to do this- at least with 61 year old eyes.

thanks everybody! those two techniques do help allot. am getting better. found a silver ring, 3.13 in cash and 5 matchbox cars in the yard.and a few historical pieces of metal. lol thanks again Jim
