Ace 150 or Ace 250

siz

New member
so i'm thinking about spending the money on a newer metal detector then the one i currently have. i'm thinking about either the 150 or 250 because i have so far heard good things about these machines and they aren't horribly expensive. i am looking for some in put on what the forum thinks of the machine, i want it all, the good, the bad, and if there is any the ugly. thanks in advance to those who respond.

I would go with the Ace 250...there are no cons with this detector. Easy to use and it makes incredible finds !

thanks for the advice, i was a bit partial with the 250 to begin with but i thought i would see what people thought of the 150 as well. hopefully soon i'll have the spare money to get it.

If you were scooping dry sand on a beach only then the 150 would be all you need. But the 250 has way more features. The best being the pinpoint feature. With this you can size your targets and it will help you weed out some trash with how the pinpoint tone fades. I won't explain it until you have some time on it. Get the 250!

I would go for the 250 as well. I have one as a back up and love the thing. Dont use it very often but when I do its always fun. It's the only Garrett i've ever owned, the bell tone works great for me being a coin hunter. The only thing I would do is get the larger coil for it. The 350 is a little more money but from what i've heard it's a killer detector that has a few more features that the 250 doesn't. Either way you cant go wrong. Good luck with whatever you decide. Joe.

thanks guys for the advice.

@Khouse: i'll let you know when i get it so i can get some pointers from you.

@Joe: i would go for the 350 but i don't have the money for it, even though it is only about 100 more i don't really have the money for the 250 so getting that is a stretch in its own. what i may do is purchase the 250 and then down the road just buy a new larger coil for it.

siz, the 250's stock coil is fantastic. You won't need another one for quite a while. Nice to have options though..

I've seen some used 250's sell for around $155 Keep looking in the classifieds. Nothing wrong with buying a used one. They last forever.

Just looked at the big auction site. There is one used 250 so far. Make sure you search all the other forums.

Or place a wanted ad in the classifieds for a 250. I'm sure you'll find one for the money you were going to spend on a new 150.

@Slingshot: on relics mode what kind of things do you find, do you find jewlery on that mode or is it for like cross, symbols, off shoot metals like titanium ect?

@Mcdave: ya it would be a while before i even get a second coil for it. so the stock one would have to do but its good to hear that it works really well.

@Khouse: i check the craigslist often, but around me people aren't selling, and since my car is currently off the road there's no way for me to really travel to pick up one. but i will keep searching and if i find a deal around me, or find a online deal i'll do that as well. thanks for the advice

now i got a question for you guys, what is the best find you have found with the 250? could be anything that you view as the best find, like coins, rings, symbols of some sort, maybe even a picture in a metal frame.

My best find so far with the 250 was a 30 something merc dime. Was about 6" down, gave off a great signal. Keep in mind that I haven't really got alot time on it. I was using the X-Terra70 as my primary and brought both and was switching back and forth between the two. The Ace250 is a very nice detector that performs very well in my ground.

i got my used for $150.00 and to day march 22 i just got i got my first 1964 silver quarter with no mint mark my ace 250 is hitting silver now
woot woot

and the first time out i got my first gold ring and some clad then a norther gold ring and one silver ring the ace 250 is a good starter detector

@surfman: i enjoy collecting coins and tell you what if i found a merc dime i would truly be ecstatic about it.

@greenhorn62: those are some awesome finds, i work at a gold buying place so if i was to ever find a gold or silver ring, i can give my self an idea as to their worth which is pretty handy, and to tell if they are real gold or not.

today was kind of a bust, i found a buckle of sorts, and a spool of copper wiring, plus i found the old abandoned grave yard i've heard about that's in the woods a little off of the trail i was on.

Okay, siz. You've probably read in the forums somewhere that the best setting for rings is just above iron and dig everything-That's the Relics mode. In high tab areas, you can go to the customs mode, copy the coins mode setting and just add the foil icon so as to find some rings that DO fall in that area-and that's a pretty high percentage. Or any other configuration-the point being that it will STAY that way when you power off. The Relics mode, to me, is just plain awesome, though it picks up a lot of metal,(you STILL have the id, though) and helps a lot with some of the target masking. The a/m mode is fabulous, but some places have a lot of iron trash-thus the Relics mode.

@slingshot: ya i may try the relics mode, its just the machine i have is a gtax750 so its a bit older and i don't have a manual for it or anything and i was originally borrowing it from someone but i lost contact with them before i could give it back so i just keep it safe and use it when i can. unfortunately tomorrow is my day off but here in new york we're getting snow so no help there. hopefully soon it will be nice and warm and i can go out on a real hunt and find some good stuff

Just use the 750 instead of buying a 250. Then save your clad, recycle metal, take odd jobs etc. Then move up to the ATpro. By then you'll be an expert.

@khouse: the problem is it picks up most other metals just as it would a coin, it gives of solid signals for aluminum when its in coin setting, not sure why but it does get annoying when all you find is big pieces of trash metal, and sadly i don't have a car to keep it all and bring it to a scrap yard

Thank you for the guide orion42
