Accessory coils for the E-Trac....What is recommended?

As far as larger coils, what is the best recommended? I recently ordered a 16.5 excelerator which I haven't tried yet. Are the s.e.f. coils or double d more desireable to use? Anyone with some experience in this matter? Thanks for any input! -Dave

I am just a couple of steps up the ladder from a 'newbie' but that just might make my input more valuable. I recently got the 12X15 SEF and I love it. I can pinpoint with it better than I can the stock ET coil. You have to be a tri-athelete to use it without a swingy thingy. It's sensitive. Accurate... you can cover a lot of ground with it. If you are working slow and low like you are supposed to, all other things being equal, you can investigate 25% more area than with the stock coil.
I also have the Sunray 8". It saved my sticking with the SE and then the ET. In trashy areas I cannot tame the stock coil. I need something smaller. I have a 8X6 SEF ordered and as soon as I get it, the Sunray 8" is going on the forum classifieds. I owned the Sunray12" for awhile but it's only 1" larger than the stock coil and that is not significant. It did separate trash better and I could pinpoint with it more easily than the stock coil. It's gone now.
Hope that helps a little...Jim

The 4.5 x 7 eliptical Excellerator coils are great for trashy or woodsy areas while the 15 x 12 SEF is a great coil for the wide open areas.

I like the 4.5 x 7 because it has the slim width with the 7 inch length. Ideal for real trashy areas and for the woods, it is a DD eliptical coil that has about the same depth as the standard 11 inch factory coil. I find it is easier to swing around brush and can fit in areas that the factory coil could not.

I really like the 12 x 15 SEF coil. Man can this thing cover some ground. I believe it is about 2 inches deeper than the factory coil and I love the way it pinpoints. Very accurate for such a large coil. It is kind of heavy, but after a while you get used to it. I love it for the beaches and open farm fields.

I would get the larger coil first and use your finds to pay for the smaller coil. That is what I did. I rarely use the factory coil any more. It is nice but is a compromise.

If you can swing it, pardon the pun, get an extra lower shaft with each coil you get. It makes changing them a snap and much faster. It'll probably also get you to try different coils in different areas more often because it's so easy to change to a different coil.. Somewhere on this forum I posted a picture of my modification of the upper shaft, when using the X-1, that allows you to still put the cord through the center of the shaft instead of wrapping it around the outside. I can snake the coil I'm changing through that cut out just as easily as I could if I wasn't using the X-1. If you haven't gotten the Sunray X-1 probe, put it on your list.

I just seen an Excelerator "DD" 4.5"X7" coil on Ebay with a starting bid of $99 and a Buy It Now for $130 and the auction ends on May-12-09

I'd by one again if I didn't already have one. This coil is a great tool to have for those trashy areas.

SEF coils are double D coils only a different shape, I changed from the wot 15" to the 15x12 SEF and find it much better for depth, sensativity and discrimination, I have found earing backs with my 15x12 on the beach at suprising depths so no probs with smaller objects, there are also bigger ones, 18x15 and 21x18, although i havn't tried them, pity you hadn't asked before ordering the excelerator coil as the exelerators are old tech and personally i think not as good here in my type of ground, you can also go down a step or two with the 12x10 or 8x6 for hard trashy/iron clad areas
