Could someone please tell me what size would your first accessorie coil be and why?
thank you
jim

My first coil I bought was the X8 of Sunrays as i feel I need a smaller coil than the stock one to help learn the Explorer and also for the sites that are a bit trashy, Then I got the X12 for the areas that is not trashy and wanted a ligher coil than the stock one. Then I got the X5 for the super trashy site as I need the seperation of targets and found it depth to be good too.
I think I would recomend the 8 inch coil first as you will use it more.

Hey Jim,
When I first started out with the XS, I was using the stock 10.5 inch coil. I had a rough time pinpointing with it and also I felt that I was bumping into nearby targets while I was trying to isolate my target of interest. I switched to the 7.5" Minelab coil. I liked it alot better because I could test my target of interest and explore the area around the target without hearing too many targets at once. The 7.5" coil was also easier for me to pinpoint with. So the coil I learned on was the 7.5" coil. I found coins down to 9 inches deep with it, so depth was not a problem. The 7.5" coil is great for super trashy areas too as it has good target separation even when 2 targets are under the coil at the same time.

Jim depends on what type sites your hunting.. big open areas you might want a bigger coil, but for most situations I would say the sunray X8 is the first one I would think about.. the ml 8 inch OK too, but the sunray is lighter and just seems to run smoother in my opinion

Does the X12 just cover more ground or does it actually go deeper than the stock 10" coil?

You have some that say it does go deeper while other say it will not, so if it dont it is close and my deepest coins have come with the X12 for me.
The main reason I use it is it is balanced better and lighter weigh and seem to have very good target seperation for me over the stock coil.

Hello, I agree with Rick(ND). I own a 5" coil and many times I think I would rather own the 8". The 8" gives good separation and still covers a fair amount of ground with each sweep. With the 5" coil, I am always anxious to swith back to a larger coil so I can cover a little more ground without worrying about whether I overlapped my last swing enough so that I don't miss anything. The Minelabs with DD coils can sort through trash better than any other machine out there. I would say that the 5 incher is best suited for EXTREMELY trashy areas. I wish I would have bought the 8 inch instead. This has been my experience anyway and I hope this info helps you to make a choice that you will be happy with. Good luck and H.H.
