About the death of Wayne Otto and some questions!

Steve and Bia

New member
first, I would like to express my sympathy to the Otto's and to all who are dealing with the loss of a loved one.

Second, What is a sand bar and how can someone fall off of it? I read that Wayne was at a lake when the tradgedy happened but wonder if this is something a newbie like me should wory about when I'm in the ocean surf.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

-Steve

Hey Steve and Bia,

Sand bars r made by water movement in rivers an at the beach, the r i guess u could say islands under the water that sometimes have deep water around them r maybe on one r two sides, u could slide off of one while ur detecting and if u paniced r had waders on that could fill with water u could be in real trouble. When i hunt the beaches here in Texas i use the coil to test water depth as i'm searchin , i touch the bottom at times n if the water looks deeper i use the coil to feel the bottom changes. Just be aware of the water depths as u go deeper n pay attention to rip tides because they cause holes as they run parralell to the beach.

I was with Wayne as he started his next journey. It was Joe stated. The hole was created by a river channel. The lake was an impoundment that was dropped. He was not wearing waders. Only a swimming suit.

I'm new to the beach scene and my ignorance is tryig to get the best of me. I just bought a beach machine and am anxious to hit the surf but it never occured to me that danger could be lurking in the waters. The latest bad news has me questioning everything and now I'm re-thinking how I'm going to surf hunt. Just last week I was tempted to do a popular lake here but I never thought for one second about the dangers... until now. I would have walked out chest deep without thinking about the possibility of slipping into deeper water with a metal detector and scoop strapped to me.
