About Searching and asking Questions

harryhh

Member
Just a short time ago I posted a question asking about how to use the forum. I was kindly pointed to an answer, and given some information. But, what I want to mention here is something I found in the information I was pointed to. This is part of what it said:

(If you get confused just post about it and someone will see your post and give you the help needed. We strongly encourage you to post here and strongly discourage regular posters from ever giving a new member a hard time. If you don

I see the forum becoming an endless loop if we are asking the same things over and over instead of covering new material . If you're new to the hobby and you're asking questions why not get instant gratification by searching instead of typing your question and then waiting for a response from other people?

Which detector are you currently or thinking about using?

I'm using the CTX 3030. Great machine I think. But, it belongs to my sister. I'm supposed to learn how to use it, then teach her. We'll share it from time to time. She used to have a different detector 15 years ago, and never found a coin. Dug too much junk. I've never done metal detecting before, but I did some research, and recommended a few different machines for her. While the CTX can be a little complicated, I recommended machines that had a lot of automatic stuff on them, and ones which had displays that would be easier for her to interpret. Basically, ones that you could go right out of the box and be able to do better than the simple machines.

There's a whole lot to learn about metal detecting, but I think she will be able to use this machine at whatever level she wants to learn. Especially, with the flexibility of the CTX, I can set it up for her to discriminate out a bunch of junk. She'll miss a lot that way, but she can have a fun, relaxing time at detecting if that's what she wants. I like the flexibility that the CTX offers, and she can go as far as she enjoys doing.

This forum is getting ridiculous!

harryhh,

" But I find all too often that there are pages and pages of responses to a search"

Reading those is not only how you find out what you want to know at that instant, but also how you find out things you didn't know about to ask about.

Before I bought a CTX I spent three week reading back over most of 130 plus pages of topics, which meant several thousand responses. I learned more than I would have ever thought to ask about.

Still reading, still learning.

are we there yet are we there yet are we there yet? there is only 1 answer

Welcome aboard to the CTX 3030 forum then. If you look at the top, there is a red banner that Resource center. Much to learn there as well. Many of the operators here are very knowledgable. Ask away.

The only answer you really need to know anyway is 42. Now go swing that super computer lightsabre and get some experience.

Ask as many questions as you like! This is a public forum, open to any and all questions and discussions. Happy Hunting!!!!!!!!

I'm right with him. Ask away. One thing to note is it would be helpful to the future readers of past posts if you ask a question that may provide progress in the area the question is about. That's if you have found a similar answer to your question, but the question isn't the same exact one you would be concerned with. I have posted questions on here that I thought would provide a better understanding of the topic after seeing similar questions and reading all the responses. Recently I asked a question like this about "Unusual VID Numbers" and Digger (Randy) helped explain the topic very well and clearly. You should check that one out. There was bonus information included in his explanation like a helpful book that would probably make a person understand how the detector sees the metals then translates them to a person through the numbers you see on the screen.

Hope this helps and check that post out plus the Resource Center.

Another method you might consider is to pick out a half dozen credible/knowledgeable posters (Digger comes to mind), check their profile/view all posts and
that will keep you busy for awhile......and don't ask how you determine credible and knowledgeable, you'll know em' when you read em'. JMHO

You cant worry about what every single member thinks. This is a great site but this is STILL the internet. You will never please everyone!

My opinion is ask away, but if you are really interested, you will devour (read) as much information as you can. When i bought my etrac all i did was read the last years worth of posts on this site and others.

You should feel free to ask any question you want, and if one or a few people dont like it, so what.

Ya know there is nothing that says that anyone has to read or reply to any post except their own desire to to so.
Having said that i cant figure out why such things bother a few.

Before we all start feeling bad for Harry being "chastised" which by definition is punished or reprimanded severely for asking questions, lets look at the history leading up to this topic being discussed in the first place....

Harrys second post was in the CTX forum and is below
"Okay, so I'm not real good at forums.
I been looking for some explanation of how to use this forum.
What are the red dots?
What are the little pins (sticky pins I would think)?
What's the little cartoon caption thing?
How do I contact a moderator?
How do I private message someone?
How do I see someones profile?
I would think this information is here somewhere. I've probably missed it. I'm real good at missing things."

Another forum members responded with the following and included a screenshot and an arrow point to where Harry should click
"harryhh, go back to the Main Forum Index, and click on the New Users Forum link in the sponsor section. Many of your questions may already be answered there."

Now I think Harry is being unreasonable to consider the forum useless because he thought the response he got was equivalent to being chastised....

Calm down everyone. I didn't think my little post would cause a minor problem. I knew the post sounded a little mussy but thought I would post it anyway.

The post quoted by GKMan above was basically my first post. I couldn't figure out some of the things I wanted to know and couldn't find some things. The post was answered and I was pointed to what I needed. The rules of the post.

In those rules was a slightly strong statement that if you have a question, ask, and you won't be in trouble for the question, even if it has been asked before. I liked the way it was stated and thought I would make this post about it.

I was saying that over the years I have been chastised a few times for asking a question that has already been answered. Sometimes strongly. Come-on, has anyone here always found the answer they were looking for in the search responses? If we did, we wouldn't need the 'Post New Message' button, would we.

I was saying that in the past such negative responses to a question made me uncomfortable with posting another question on those forums. That made those forums virtually useless to me. Again, I liked the strongly worded statement in the rules, about asking questions, and thought I would post about it.

This slight row was unexpected. I wasn't criticizing this forum, but praising it.

GK, I don't need to be defended. I can do so myself if needed. In the first post about 'How to use the forum,' it was answered and I thanked the people. In the second post about 'Asking Questions,' I complimented those who had answered my first question. I wasn't feeling chastised. I am a little surprised here by the response from my post. Some have obviously missread the posts, or perhaps I didn't write them well.

Anyway, I wasn't feeling chastised. I'm not now feeling chastised. Just trying to correct what seems to be a small understanding here. I must have written my two posts badly. Hope I don't make it worse here.

Harry
I am sorry I gave you the impression I was trying to defend you when I wasn't. Your post made it sound to myself at least like you were feeling chastised by the response you got since you said "the forum was useless to you" which made me feel offended since it has been so helpful and enjoyable to me. In my opinion you are not going to find a better source for assistance with the CTX on the web.

So lets put this to bed pick up the shattered pieces of our lives, and go detecting. (well I can't since I am at work) boohoo.....

GKMan,

I wasn't really offended. I knew there was some misunderstanding here. Thank you for your last response.

Harry

Well I for one am offended. Offended that my wife didn't meet me sooner so our kids would have been born sooner and old enough to go detecting with me today on the nicest spring day so far while my wife is out of town running in a half marathon. Probably my own fault though. Maybe the next generation Minelab should come with a babysitter.
