Aarrgghh!!

Well, I just bought a new Golden uMax to replace the one I foolishly sold.

I got it home and assembled and it and as soon as I started air testing I knew something was wrong.

Most targets, including coins, were giving me a scratchy signal and the dime was barely picked up at all.

Depth on the signals was about half of what my other Golden was.

Thinking it might be electrical interference in the house, I took it outside, found some clean ground and repeated the test.

Same result.

So it's boxed up and headed back to Tesoro Monday morning.

I've never had to return a Tesoro before.

I'm sure they will fix it, but I wonder what the problem was?

Not sure what the problem is but was curious if it didn't seem right in both modes - all metal & discriminate. Too bad there is a problem with it but the good folks @ Tesoro will fix it up for ya.

this is extremely unusual,as their "quality control"
is second to none!..just sayin'

I agree with you.

Tesoro is a great company.

My biggest fear is that they get and tell me they can't find anything wrong.

Then I'd feel like I was going nuts.

i'm already there so i can empathize with that!
heh! heh! heh!..just sayin'

No, I did not think to do that. I battery I was using was brand new.

Now that I have thought about it a bit, I wonder if the problem might not be in the coil itself.

I shipped it this morning to Tesoro, so whatever is going on, I'm sure they will find out.

Well folks, my Golden uMax is being shipped back to me today.

What was the problem?

The problem was me.

All this time I always thought that the Threshold knob only applies when running in all metal.

Not so with the Golden. The Threshold knob matters even in Disc mode.

I had the Threshold turned all the way down and massacred my depth in the process.

Once the threshold knob was turned back up, everything worked perfectly normal.

Boy, do I feel stupid even though the folks at Tesoro were really nice about it.

Go ahead, mock me.

Now I have a name to the Smudge. I am glad to help you out.

Did they send an instruction manual with it?:rofl:

Hey-on the serious side. I'm contemplating one. I have the Compadre but would like to know the main reasons you like yours and why you missed it. Thanks.

Now that this came up, I remember reading that the threshold setting has an affect in both modes on my Silver Sabre

I like the tones because sometimes I don't have a lot of time to hunt and I just like to coin shoot. So I just dig the high tones. I lose nickels and "zincolns" by doing that, but no big deal to me. I still hit copper pennies, dimes, quaters and all other silver and clad coinage.

When i want gold jewelry, I dig the mid tones too.

I think the depth is great and I don't mind the fixed ground balance because my soil is really mild.

I was also surprised by how well it did in the wet sand of my local beach (salt). It ran amazingly quiet and got fair depth (about 4-5").

For me, this really is the best machine out there for my purposes and I really felt foolish having sold my first one.

I guess sometimes you don't know what you've got 'til its gone.
