A word on iron signals...

Ever since I started detecting, I would mostly use disc. mode to search schoolyards and parks. I knew that there were iron signals in these places, but I always figured they weren't worth digging. Then, a few months ago, I decided to start digging them, just to see what they were. While some were indeed junk, many were actually nickels and other desirable targets (including some rings and jewelry- junk, mostly, but definitely fun to find). Keep in mind, these were solid iron signals in every direction. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. I also wanted to get the message out there; that is, don't be afraid to switch into all metal and dig those "junk" signals on occasion.

What bounty hunter are you using? I use a TrackerIV and a 505, I never have dug the iron signals before but I might start now. My 505 is at the factory getting a tune up with all three coils. I can't wait for it to get back here before the ground freezes. I hope that I an get at least I get in one hunt to try some of these signals before the ground freeze.

bountyhunter1972, I use the lone star, usually with either the 4 inch or 8 inch coil. In my experience, however, the size of coil used doesn't impact the appearance of these iron signals.

Even with iron discriminated out, the park near my home where I MD has so many signals that I ignore perhaps 80% of them. If I search in all metal and dig them all, there would be virtually none of the 5 acres of lawn left and I would be spending time in the Graybar Hotel.

I have a White's prizm II and would dig up iron just to see if it was accurate. Since it was very accurate I stopped digging when in all metal and the target was iron. Went out hunting with gogogopher the other day and he mentioned about finding nickels in the iron signals. Sure enough I put the prizm in all metal, had an iron signal, dug and it was a nickel. Found 3 more after that when it read iron. Guess I'm going to have to start digging on iron signals.

I am always finding nickels that read solid iron...Most of the time this is in areas that use heavy fertilizers, and I am thinking it changes the halo made by the coin.
