A word on gain

My thoughts I always hear about people lowering it so they can hear a deep target from a shallow one  or they say it keeps the falsing down because you don't hear those deep falses as loud as before .Just to let the machine to run quieter  now the reason it runs quieter your not hearing
those deep coins junk and nails.

I run at 30 and I well tell you why , by putting it at 30 does not make the surface targets any louder it well make a deep dime sound like a surface target or nail and junk so now that surface target is no louder than that deep dime , if coming off a surface target to a deep dime are you going to hear that if your gain is to hear deep dimes as deeper targets. Another thing all targets are just as loud as the next which is easier to hear that dime in the mix .

Now say your running in auto with lower gain your moving along and sensitivity drops are you going to hear those deeper targets that well even be quieter .
So crank it up all it does is make all targets just as loud as the next . sube

Gain is nothing more than modulation of a target. Im a water hunter and run mine at 27. I like to keep some of that mineral noise down...... but the real reason is it gives me a better grip on the size of the target out there. Headphones with speakers that respond well make a huge difference as well on the CTX. Sensitivity, volume, and gain can all give you a little difference in response...... one setting isnt best, there are times you might want to play around with these on deep targets, especially found targets.

Dew I like to keep some of that mineral noise down...... but the real reason is it gives me a better grip on the size of the target out there. Well if you like to keep some of the mineral noise down your also keeping fringe at depth targets down when a target is at depth that 3 points of gain may be all you need to get that target to sound , since your at 27 your really not getting rid of much mineral noise anyway .

Now as to modulation to get a grip on the size of the target running at 27 to 30 there's no difference to my ears you would have to run gain at 15 to 18 to see a difference where deep targets are soft and surface targets are louder .Where targets are close together sizing don't work anyway because you can't sweep one without hitting another the only way to size here is to lift your coil . sube

I get tired of digging rice sized aluminum nuggets and bring the gain down to help me focus on the solid signals. If you are on some tourist beach with clean beaches I can see how 30 would be the way to go - unless fire pits are there...

Agreed Sube...in Auto. If I run Manual Sens things get sparkier faster so it depends. If I'm in Manual in a pretty junk free site and good soil....then 30. If there are problems which cause too many false signals from minerals or junk, then I'll go as low as 20 on the Volume Gain. This is usually using the small or stock coil, the huge coil doesn't seem to be as sensitive to all those tiny things that false at high Gain in Manual Sens. The video where I found the Franklin had stuff in the ground that would make even the 17" coil false sporadically,so I had to turn it down.. Even at that...the difference between a false and a deep coin is almost always audibly noticeable. It just takes time, and that's THE biggest challenge I had when I got the Explorer2....to tell a false from a coin hit. With the experience and a good ear,Gain can usually be pushed to 30 on most occasions around here.

Idx gain is nothing more than a signal boost all targets at 30 will sound off with the same intensity , which will make the falses louder and the minerals louder you are not getting rid of the falses and minerals by reducing gain you are only making them quieter same as a deep coin .Now manual at the same #s as auto manual is like auto running 3 to 4 #s higher so your running with more sensitivity in manual verses auto that's why it's sparkier.

In situations like you said it would be better to lower your sensitivity which does have a effect on falses and mineral chirps . But you will not get rid of falses or mineral chirps with any adjustments you can make them quieter but there still there . Now if we lower sensitivity you will say it won't detect as deep but all targets the ctx sees at 30 gain will be as loud as the next one making them easier to here . But if you raise sensitivity and lower gain to get rid of falses deep coins and mineral noise what have you gained . So if you have this problem lower your sensitivity . sube

Ok I'll give it a shot and see how it's goes. Thanks Sube!
