A week with the SEF 10x12 coil

Well I decided to buy a 12x10 SEF coil - and after a couple of hunts here are my thoughts....

Easy to connect up - no issue with overall balance, feels exactly the same as the stock 10" Tornado in my hands....

Took it too my testing ground........ which is a sort of beach area..... difficult to describe so I won't go into detail but I will say its an utter nightmare to detect which is why I have never seen anyone else try. The result of a short test there was certainly promising - I know there is old stuff, but previously the earliest dated coin I had found was 1930's. The SEF in an hour managed a 1912, 1920 and a 1896........ all totally worthless coins but it shows the potential of that site. Also found

sounds like that coil is not just a gimmick, humm good find on the gold ,

BeachBat,

Thanks for the in depth review on the 12x10 SEF coil. Nice finds too!

Good review. My 12x10 seems to seperate better, makes crisper sounds, goes a bit deeper, and is more stable. I also think these coils hit coins on edge better due to the morphed DD/concentric field signal they are putting out. Take the coil cover off and use spray on bed liner and the coil is even lighter than an S-12.

Also, even at the same exact sens setting the 12x10 is deeper than my 10" Tornado. I've tested them both on a buried dime several times and it always appears the SEF is deeper.

A friend and long time beach hunter had an older Sovereign, with the S-12 coil, as his main detector. As I said, he has used this setup a long time and recovered hundreds of gold items. He recently bought a new GT and ordered a 10x12SEF and used both coils then compared the results. After years and much success using the S-12 he decided the 10x12SEF is his main coil and is keeping the S-12 as a back up.

good diggin randy

Good info. I know of somebody who owned the S-12 and 12x10 and found the 12x10 was more sensitive to small jewlery. She also remarked about finding a gold chain that she's sure the S-12 would not have hit.

I must admit that I have been wondering whether my Tornado coil would have found the necklace, I will never know for sure - but I have my suspicions.....

In many years of detecting that is the first necklace I have ever found - on the first 'proper' hunt with the SEF, it could be a fluke - but having read those couple of comments then maybe not.......... will just have to find another one to add weight to the SEF liking thin chains....
