My wonderful wife and I just spent a delightful week at St Simon's Island Ga. It abounds with beautiful golf courses and fresh sea food at every eating spot. Did partake of the great sea food dishes and shrimp and grits has become my favorite. Since I don't golf, I spent on an average of 4 hours a day detecting between the turf spots and the beach.
The beach was rough going as it was really sanded in. Sand bars that were small when we were there last winter are now large and run for hundreds of yards off shore. Although I did recover 1 small 925 bead like item from the sand, a couple of pieces of junk jewelry and 30 or so pieces of clad and Memorials, beach hunting was tough. I had my best results inland from parks and sidewalk strips.
I haven't counted the clad as of yet, but did manage upwards of $7.00 to $8.00 and was fortunate enough to recover several older varieties of coins. In total, I recovered 7 silver dimes. 1 1906 Barber, 4 Merc's., a 44, 42d, 40 & 20s. Also, a 51 and 56 Rosie. As is typically the case, that area is not kind to silver. The 1 black Merc. was nestled right up against a sidewalk slab of cement. Most all coins were in and close to roots. I also got a 1907 V nickel, a 1919 Buffalo and a 192? Buffalo and a 1907 I H cent. And, also recovered 14 what cents. The oldest being a 20, 23 and 30. The rest 40's and 50's.
My prize dig was the Hercules Powder Co 50th anniversary 1912-1962, what appears to be a fob. Hercules is now part of Dupont.
I had on the A T the NEL Sharpshooter coil and never took it off all week. My 11" coil appears to have taken a distinct dislike to water and heavy dew covered grass and will be going to the Dr for a check up. HH jim tn
