A week In Myrtle Beach area

Nice trip. Great weather, great time. Found the normal stuff. Threw all the bottle caps out before leaving the beach. Found one toe ring and a ring, both junk. Found a pretty pendant, said WOW until I turned it over and saw the marking. One nice pair of sun glassed that are unscratched and a brand that sells for about $30 new (I'm sure one of the kids will claim them). Just over $10 in change.

The find of the week was a cell phone; iPhone 7. When I got back to the room and rinsed it off, it showed life with a nearly dead battery. It charged up and came up unlocked. Wife poked around and was able to find it's owner. It was lost about 5 days before I dug it up about 3 to 4 inches down in the wet soupy sand. It is on it's way back to the owner.

Sounds like you had the normal finds for a South Carolina beach. Except I find more bottle caps down my way.

I found plenty of bottle caps, I just threw them in the trash cans before leaving the beach. I've been putting the caps in a different pouch compartment so it is easy to get rid of them and not have to look at them again; so they did not make the picture. The tabs go to the school my wife works at since they collect them.

The amount of sand on the beach was a surprise considering they are starting a replenishment effort. Had heard they started in Surfside and are working north. News reported they had equipment breakage that stopped them for a few days while we were there. They had not gotten to any of the areas I was at during the week. I saw sand up to at least the second or third step on the walkways going over the dunes to the beach. The drainage pipes were not clear of sand. Beaches did not look like they needed any sand. Sounds like a big waste of tax payer money (again).

Meet a visitor down here in FL. from MB, she called it Dirty Myrtle, thought our beaches are beautiful. I've never been their, but heard better of it from others.
GL, getting that yellow stuff on your next trip, I think you were due on this one with all those tabs you recovered....

Myrtle Beach would go broke in a short period of time if it were not for people coming to play on the sand. The City and County want to make sure that there is lots and lots of dry sand to accommodate the million or two visitors that show up each year. That is why they are always spending money for more sand.

I have three beaches in my area and they get eroded quite heavily from time to time. Folly Beach is trying to get the Corp of Engineers to re nourish the beach due to the extreme erosion caused by Hurricane Matthew. That beach does not get any sand movement from the north due to the jetties at Charleston harbor blocking the sand.

As much as we dislike them covering everything up with sterile sand it does become a necessary evil if we expect to have a beach to detect.

Yes, had a great week. Very mentally relaxing but wore myself out swinging the detector and digging. One week of 4 hours a day or so of wet boots and they smell like neoprene. At home a few minutes in the local beach and the boots start to smell bad (and not like neoprene). Water quality is better there than here. Wife's back was bothering her so she didn't dig as many shells as most trips. She did get a couple of nice whelk shells and enough olive shells to fill a quart bottle.

We are hoping for good weather and lots of good targets when we get to Daytona at end of September.

I hear what you are saying, but the sand levels I found from south end of Myrtle Beach up to Cheery Grove kind of indicated sand had moved in naturally. Sand levels were a little lower back in April when we were last here. This trip I did find one nice trough in the water on one day where it was washed out and I was digging clay up with the few targets. Next day it was all filled in and I didn't find firm ground again during the rest of the week.

The bottle cap/tab ratio to good finds is about right. I live in NMB and some areas have plenty of sand but some do need it. The area north of Apache pier and Cherry Grove for a start. I use an ET and have found how to by pass 90% of caps. They are so bad in OD almost like you are walking on them and not sand. They are working north from Surfside and I believe there is some bickering about the campground beaches and they aren't paying for it. Congrats on the phone recovery. They were lucky you found it. I found a S7 Active last week and returned it to the owner the next day from e mail address that popped on the screen.. Glad they were still here.

Detected this past weekend at Apache pier area, there was quiet a bit of sand and bottle caps. found a toy car buried about 4 to 6 inches in the sand, not a bit of rust on it. No doubt sand is coming in from ocean or brought in..
