a very old watering bit

GRAY GHOST

New member
hello again, all. shown is a very old iron watering bit for horses. it was found on an old farm near a battlefield here in central va., so who knows if it was civilian or military? i sure don't. the hooked latch still works well, and i spent some time preserving it. it was very heavily encrusted. at first, without really looking at it, i surmised it might be an old set of slave manacles. my hunt partner, olddigger, quickly set me straight on it! but hey, what the heck, it's still a good ol' find. hh,

your're right, vol1266x. we'll never know for sure, but hey, it was a neat find. olddigger and i couldn't go on a planned trip to ashland, man it rained buckets here yesterday. all day too. there's always next time! thanks, and hh,

Sorry Gray Ghost but that's not a "watering" bit but a "snaffle" bit. Those have been in use since before the American Revolution and are still used today. It is probably civilian (especially considering where you found it). As you said, its still a great find. HH

HS is right, it is a snaffle bit. From the condition of it, I would say a sweet iron snaffle. Who knows if it was civilian or military, CW or not, that my friend is a very nice find. The problem with snaffles is they have used them for so long when you find one you don't have a clue how old they are.

I got a snaffle bit, that I dug up, holding the door shut on my chicken house. Ahhh, the uses of old stuff...d2
