A V and a Shield

hatpin

New member
Went to a park today to fool around with the settings of the Vaquero. I wanted to super tune because I havent done much of it. I had the sens set to the end of the red. It was running stable there. Had the threshold at the 2 o'clock position and disc set between the first two marks. Found the first coin about 7 inches deep and on its side . It wasnt real loud and didnt have that good mellow sound. The second coin was about 5 inches deep and sounded great. Also found a gold plated pin that I thought was real until I got it home . One coin is a 1902 V and the other looks like an 1886 Shield .I cant get a good picture because they are so corroded .

kool find

sounds like the super tune paid off, I even found it works on my moded Umax hit a dime at 8" and 9 gain

Probably a different date if it is a shield nickel...they stopped making them in 1883. Maybe you meant 1863? ;)

Looks like it might be 1868. Its hard to make out .

I think the only coins left in this park are deep or nickles . I've been listening for faint signals and trying to decipher them . I'm hoping by super tuning I can get some more silver dimes .

Nice finds hatpin. Shield nickels are hard to come by. They are for me anyhow. I've only found two. Do you find any clad in this park or just older stuff?

Great work on those old nickels! I think you are right, most old parks have been killed for silver, and the nickels take a dedicated ear...good on ya Hat! You may just find some old silver underneath a nickel along the way! You will for sure find gold nickel hunting as well..:clapping: I like to read bout somebody hunting and finding old nickels...

I didnt find any clad this day , but yeah the park is heavily used. I was hunting an area that people just dont go to very often .

Ive been studying the Shield. I am 99 percent certain it is 1868 . I think that makes it my third oldest readable coin.
