I had been promising our kids, and a few neighbor kids, a pirate chest treasure hunt for a couple of months. The hold up was the unavailability of chocolate covered gold coins. Finally, Wal Mart got them in with their Easter order of candy. I bought $15 worth, enough to fill up a small treasure chest.

I drew three pirate maps, and hid them in three different locations. Of course, I had to give them the first map, which I just happened to find in an old dusty satchel in the attic... at least, that's what I told them.

Here some of the kids are studying the map, trying to figure out the riddle to the next map. Lots of ideas were flying, of what the riddle could be. Finally, they figured it out...

Off they go to an old stump with a hole in it, out in the pasture. The clues of the riddle revealed the next location of map #2.

After finding the second map, they figured out the riddle to the third map, which was hidden in the graveyard that is on our property. Some of the tombstones date back to the 1830's.

Posing in the graveyard, they all look like a bunch of "deadbeats".. ahem. Now they've located the third map, the one that tells them where the treasure's hidden.

Katie, my youngest five year old, gets to retrieve the treasure chest, since she's the littlest, and has been in the rear of all the runs so far. They opened the chest, to reveal the gold and silver chocolate coins, so it was off to the shady porch to divide up the plunder. I let the neighbor kids keep a map each, which they were happy to get, 'cause I had skulls and crossbones on them.
The end
