A Top Pro's Excal Strain Relief Mods

They guy who modified this detector uses it about every day and needs to have it work. When he gets a new machine he mods the cables at the housing, wand and coil to reduce strain. Hi uses 3m rubberized tape and thick automotive tubing to reinforce the detector cable's stress points. At the coil, he wraps the cable down and across to lengthen the section that flexes. Here's some of his finds too--including a Choppard chain (2nd from left) and an $1,8500 rock. I would estimate that he will find around $50 000 in gold with that machine next year as he has for each of the last 12 years.

Thanks for the tip CJC! At one time I use to wrap the wires using the Miracle tape but been doing something a little different.. And That's a lot of gold for one year! 6 plus pounds = 50G

What I have been using to combat the interference from the movement of the coil cable in Saltwater and to minimize the EMI affect. Less cable and cable hidden in the shaft.

Interesting Joe and Clive. I can say thou from my experience the more movement the cable has near the coil the more likely you get a cable crack. I tape mine off really low on the lower shaft head leaving just enough to allow the coil to move freely. Joe....... in order to do what you are doing you have to be using a connector that allows you to swap coils. I do the things the old fashion way.......... i break them first then try and figure out why lol. My Dad used to say......... if you know that gets you hurt....... then dont do that.

John Here's his reply:
>> hi clive, for the wire no dosent interfere, event if you put the cable on the coil without moving the câble there no interférence, its only if you move the cable directely on the coil can have a interférence but verry littel, the way i fix it zéro interference, dosent move and its 1/2" from the coil, and my machine working perfectely and deep, try it move the câble in the front of the coil you will have no interférence its only if you move the câble derectely on the coil.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought virtually all the interference was from motion. Joe I like your set up for reducing drag in the water!

Tom...... those coils produce a field about 28" ive been told. Things that move WITH the coil normally wont be picked up, but can produce dead spots. They even used to use SS coil bolts on some machines. HOWEVER....... things that vibrate, like a loose coil cable is like waving a coin over the coil and you can get some interference/target response. When i put a coil on i tape it very close at the bottom of the lower shaft then watch it when moved in the water. If it vibrates at a fast swing......i redue it, some cables seem to have a natural way of going on....... if its put on different they vibrate.

Thanks, Dew we are in sync. One of the ways I evaluate my machines is how far from the swings I can pick up the chains and posts. It has been an eye opener! One of my guilty pleasures is after talking to someone on the beach, letting them get 20 to 30 feet away and switching my Excal on and watching them double check the nice false they just heard. Don;t tell any one, please. I have a reputation to maintain. :detecting:

Here's another shot of my buddie's keepers from last year. Last time we hunted together: Clive two gold, Pro none! A career highpoint. Only reason: deep channel, strong cross current he's .a fanner and I had my trusty Stealth 750I.

Crazy bunch of chains Clive. Rarely get our hands on one around here..... especially in those price range. I see and advantage to wearing a mask for quick pick up if you make a couple of digs pulling the target out of the hole. But i cant wrap my head around fanning. I know you get there, but when some of these rings i dig are 10 or more inches down thats a lot of arm waving. With the mask i know some guys get a lot of eyeball finds too that we miss. Miss and inch miss a mile......... id hate to think i missed a Rolex by a few inches...... better off not to know lol. Some have even mentioned the amount of floating money we miss. I seen something the other day that was interesting. It was like a boggy board you laid on face down with a huge piece of plexy glass...... that glass bottom boat effect. She was looking for stuff near shore with it. Cool idea for those who want the snorkel effect.

Tom........ that can be a good gauge of how good your machine is operating. Ive been near some guys with an Xcal pretty close before i pick up there machine..... hot ones thou..... you can tell. Ive got a good blue that can pick up on quarters that most Xcal IIs ignore as iron. In fact my blue in PP gives a little differ response...... weak bottle cap like until i remove some sand. So far these are still the best water machine ive found. Having the ability to hunt in PP is just priceless making them a totally different machine.

That's some beautiful treasure!! I use to like my old gold until I seen that picture!!

When is Spring going to get here?
