A tip for new Garrett users regardless of how much experience you may have had with other detectors..

Garrett coils are super sensitive so when you first go out with your new Garrett turn the sensitivity down to six ( four bars on the 250 ) and leave it there for many hours until you have familiarized yourself with the machine and understand what sensitivity is and is not. You're not going to miss anything and you'll spare yourself a lot of grief and lost targets. I repeat again - IT IS NOT A DEPTH CONTROL.

IMO, staying at four bars, five max., with the Ace 250 gets the best results.

Question, tho, for you guys; it's mentioned to use a faster than normal sweep speed with the 1350; does this also apply to the Ace 250??

I've been advised "low and slow". Which is best:confused:

Low and slow in trash. The 250 will go deeper the faster you swing and it's target response and recovery are really fast. But if you're swinging real fast and not paying attention you can miss a target.

Im the one who started the confusion, I suppose,. Where I find the faster sweep speed beneficial is in areas like playgrounds. There is lots of trash, with some goodies mixed in...plus lots of ground to cover. I should have been more specific.

What it will do is overlook some of the "fiddly bits" like foilies, yet still respond to good targets clearly. Once you find such targets, you slow down to process them. And Im not talking smoking fast speed here - you still have to maintain coil control. Just 10-15% faster.

I have pulled deep coins from right in the middle of the trash by doing just such things. I get a belltone in and around known trash and THEN I slow down somewhat, moving from different angles to focus the field and pick them out among the other targets. I was quite surprised the first time it happened.

But dont slow to a crawl. These Garretts need motion to do their job. In the end it's varying degrees of a "happy medium." Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Thanks everyone for the great advice; I think my tendency is to move too slow; I'll speed up a bit and see what happens.

Also, I find myself overanalyzing when moving too slow. Next thing I know the time is up and I don't feel as if I've gotten my share.
