Another hot day, so when I got home from work, I packed quickly and headed to some water to hunt. I lucked out on some loot and three rings.

After a little Dremmel and ultrasonic magic, the oxides came off and some new life came into these rings. That steel (?) one is magnetic, but it might be titanium too. Anyone know if titanium is magnetic?

Nice haul there John. One of the coins you found looks familiar. I found a loonie the other day also. I'm to poor to own any titanium so don't know about that one.

After doing a bit of research it says that titanium itself is NOT magnetic. When alloyed with other metals then it becomes so.

Thanks....it's my first stainless steel ring. WTG with one of those foreign $1.00 coins. They are bronze plate over nickel. DON'T ever make a coinring out of nickel....you will put large dents in your mandril. It's just to darn hard......

I've worked with a lot of SS John. It doesn't mag and it won't turn black. Nice fids any way you look at it.

Stainless rings are becoming popular. Hal found one and others are turning them up more and more. BTW, "stainless" is a misleading term. It will experinced rusting and be affected by chemicals, depending on its composition.

As a pipe fitter I will vague to that. I have worked with 304 stainless. It had rusted and the magnet on my level stuck to it. There are much better stainless like 316.

It will get some small pinhead size dots of rust but not enough to really notice. I pulled a SS ring out about 4 inches down and it was as shiny as the day it was dropped. I will guarantee Johns ring isn't 316 or even close. I've never seen SS turn black like that.
