A testament to slowww sweep speed w explorer

I thought I would share an experience I had today that really reinforced the fact that a slow sweep speed w/ the Explorer is essential. I went to a park/campground that I had never been to. When I arrived I discovered 3 other detectorists with Explorer XS machines were already there. Over the course of 5 hours the three of them each came up with one silver dime apiece. In the same time frame using a meticulously slow sweep I found 7 silver dimes, a walker half, a washington quarter, and a 1881-o Morgan dollar. TO top it all off I pulled a tiny Sterling ring with a 1/2 carat diamond from almost 10 inches depth. This ring won't even fit over the first knuckle on my pinky and I have small fingers. I observed the other three and all of them were making brisk sweeps. This area is loaded with pulltabs and every form of screwcap/beertop imaginable, but with patient slow swings it looks like it is going to be a wonderful area.

Duey: I read your post with interest because I only reciently have come to appreciate the advantage of the small coil with a slow sweep speed in trashey parks. If fact when the water was over the road of the place I intended to hunt yesterday I went to a 1850 Park I have been to 4 other times in the past year without finding silver. The park has been hunted to death, I hunted it back in the 70's and they had closed it off for a while because of they didn't like all the holes. I started off in the heavy trash area full of tabs, scewtops, nails, foil ect. and went very slow. My second hit was very faint between two tabs repeatable in one direction and only a chirp in the other. At only 5" on edge was a 1882 seated dime--very nice--. I hunted another hour finding only clad but I would have never have found the seated without the extreamly slow sweep speed. Thanks for you post Rick

Duey,
You are correct about going slow and listening close to those signals thay many will go right over and miss. These are the deep ones that are small and you will miss if going too fast.
Good Luck at this park as it sounds like one we all would like to get into being you got a silver dollar and a half. I have a good freind that has gotten 2 silver dollars with his Sovereign also in well worked parks, but one was a real odd signal that many would walk over. Just showes you have to know your detector and go slow if you want the goodies.

I went back to the park last night and in about 4 hours pulled 4 more Merc Dimes- 41D, 43, 44S, and 40S. Also got 2 more Roosevelt dimes 46D and 61D. Also another dozen or so Wheaties and a silver religious token.
