A/T pro depth

I hear of depth of 10 to 12 inches my max that I have hit is 6 to 8 inches can't hit a quarter at 10 inches pro or stanard zero

With my atpro "1st serie" I can hit a 50 eurocent at 30cm (12 inches) in medium mineralized soil, but it sounds in iron range...

in air test (so I suppose in neutral soil) my atpro can hear the same coin at maximum 37cm and my atgold in allmetal mode and using 11" coil reaches about 40 cm (16 inches)...

see you

A great deal seems to depend on ground conditions, how long it's been buried and target size. I've hit coins at 9" but they'd been down there a long time. It's said that in the right conditions the oxides will leach into the soil making a halo effect that make the target easier to hit. I hit an old small lead sinker at 11" and it was very old, I believe the halo effect is real. Freshly buried will be harder to find. I hit a stove lid at 18" but it was about 10" around and laying flat.

I dont know what would make pro different, but i have no problem picking up a .22 caliber shell casing beyond 14 inches in pro mode. I measured the depth with a tape measure since i was surprised how far i had dug.

I've airtested a quarter at about 8.5-9" and some hear others doing better, maybe it's me.

From my 2 weeks of experience with the AT Pro, I've pulled (2) silver dimes at 8" each. I haven't dug any other coin as deep as that so far. I did however pull a 4" diameter piece of brass at 12+ inches yesterday. Rang up very loud, I figured it was a can at 6", boy was I wrong. HH!

Depth readings will be affected by the some of the variables as shown. This is not a complete list, there are many more.

-size of a target-> the larger the target, the deeper a target can be recognized.
-conductivity-> aluminum vs. copper vs. gold. vs. iron vs. silver. Some rings, with size & mass being equal can be detected deeper then others.
-size of coil-> general rule says "larger coil = deeper depth however, add a lot of conductive particles, metal junk and high mineralization to the matrix, and the large coil becomes redundant.
-type of coil-> DD vs.concentric vs. mono. Each coil has a definite advantage over the other under different conditions
-frequency of signal from coil-> higher frequency usually (but not always) is more sensitive to tinier objects.
-Humidity, moisture in soil, orientation of target to the coil
-ability of the operator to perceive the receiving frequency from a coil and distinguish it's conductivity, depth, size etc.
-operator - properly setting up the electonic components based on knowledge and experiences

Hitting 6-8" in some environments is actually very good.

Hi flabuckrud

From my experience over the last 5 months of using the AT Pro, I get the same as what others have posted above.

My deepest find so far has been a drainage pipe. We tested and measured it at 3' with the AT Pro.

As mentioned by John, their are variables in our own areas that we need to be aware of that can (and do) affect any metal detectors performance.

Things that affected my AT Pro:

- Steel Toe Shoes
- GPS
- Cell Phone
- My Stainless Steel Digger I Use
- Bizarre Air Wave Signals that occasionally cross our area. I have Never figured that one out and only lasts for a few seconds (UFOs?). This affects the Metal Detector and our Mike Phones.
- Coil Cable rapped to tightly around the shaft affected my performance.

Maybe something here might help.:)

Here are my two cents...

I have been hunting with the AT Pro and the 8.5x11DD coil for 7 months.

The deepest dime I have found with the AT Pro was at 8 inches.

The deepest wheat cent I have found with the AT Pro was at 9 inches.

At 8 inches in the fairly sweet soil of Kansas, the dime was but a faint, soft, high tone with no VDI.

I keep my AT Pro ground balance at 76 and never change it.

I keep my sensitivity at 1 bar below Max and hardly ever change it.

In places where EMI is heavy, my depth suffers greatly.

So, when people report 11 to 12 inches, what coin are they talking about? a quarter? a half? I hear that in places like Virginia, finding a silver dime at 6 inches is quite an accomplishment due to the heavy mineral content of the soil. I have heard reports of silver dimes being found at 9 to 10 inches. I am still looking for a depth greater than 8 inches with the 8.5x11DD coil.

BTW, I have been finding wheat cents at 6 inches with the 5x8DD. They are faint signals with an occasional VDI.

I've been mostly using the 5x8 since I haven't noticed any difference in depth against the 8.5x11 - I stick with the 5x8 because the weight is much lower and the pinpointing is very accurate. I hunt in Ontario and I've yet to find a coin older than a 1955 penny using either coil - everything seems to be 6" or less for me. I usually go by the VDI - when I've went after targets that have sounded good but no VDI I end up usually finding a pipe :/ Makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if I haven't been patient enough with the larger coil. I do notice that with the larger coil, coins ring/VDI much higher than they do with the 5x8 for some reason. Been dying to find my first silver coin, everywhere I go must of been hunted out or I'm doing something terribly wrong lol.

I found two Mercury dime tonight on a quick hunt at a small rural park. GB was a bit higher than normal for here, at 83/83. I manually set the GB at 75...AT Pro seems to be hotter on high conductive targets when dropping the GB by 5 - 10 points. Max sensitivity, Pro zero mode, Iron disc at 17, Iron Audio "on"', stock coil.

The first dime response was weak high tone, repeatable, low 80's VID, and the depth gauge was pegged. I dug 6 or seven inches, target still in the hole, no response with the pro pointer. I dug out a few more inches, and the pro pointer weakly beeped. I dug some more, and the depth of the hole was the slightly more than the full length of the pro pointer, and she was singing loudly. The dime was another half inch deep, so I'm estimating depth at 10". This is the second dime I have hit at that depth, and I do not scrub the coil when scanning. You have to listen closely for those weak repeatable high tones.

The second dime audio response was stronger, accurate VID, sweet high tone. Initial plug was about 4 to 5 inches deep, and the pro pointer sounded off. I recovered the dime at about six inches...it was stuck in the bottom of the hole...on edge, almost vertical. I was impressed the AT Pro hit the target so easily.

I also found a cool 1935 State of WA 10 cent tax token...she was a long way from home.

The AT Pro will go pretty deep...you just need to listen closely for the them.

I now own a AT Pro. My 1500 and 2500 DD coil are setting idol until I get the hang of this machine. Re hunting old play ground, school, park sites. For the last two weeks I've be digging holes deeper, in most cases, than I have before.I had to buy a new long garden spade that is ten inches. Once again today I was down to a good eight inches just to pull out a 1974 penny. I have also dug a penny that just had an mid audio tone but didn't come up on the display because of the depth. I not real sure how deeper I'm getting but I know the its becoming a real effort. I'm not really complaining but it sure would be nice to pull out some silver for all the effort. I air tested my gold ring last night and it hit at 11 inches with ID. I have read some forum posts about depth problems. I can truthful say my new At Pro is at least going as deep as my other two machines and some what more. I was a little concerned about buying a new machine because my other two have served me well. You guys know how it is, you just get weak.
