A.T. Gold prospecting

Ground balance set negative is suppressing the audio from small targets. Neutral is perfect but it is hard to be tuned perfectly neutral since the ground varies somewhat. Tuning slightly positive helps avoid faint targets getting suppressed by having the balance go temporarily negative due to varying ground conditions.

The best way to learn is experiment. The secret to running a detector is learning to tune it properly, and the best way to do that is to try different settings. Get a small gold or lead or aluminum target and try different ground balance and other settings. The goal with a test target is to try and find settings that make the ground as quiet as possible and the target as distinct as possible. In general you want the machine to run smooth and stable so faint targets stand out. Story it out yourself with ground balance set a bit negative and a bit positive and see what you think. The AT Gold also has the ground balance window to experiment with. A wider ground balance window will help suppress ground noise but I am betting it must be used with care as it probably comes with a cost. Virtually every adjustment you make on a metal detector is a trade off of sorts.
