Man, I am constantly surprised on some of my finds and the locations I find them.
I was at a normal looking park I have been to before, not super old but like most areas around here this used to be a farm long ago.
I did find my only crotal bell here last year, but mostly I hunt this site for clad and jewelry because it is used as a baseball field and has an area where the locals can play soccer, and it has a tot lot and picnic area, also.
I finally put the 10" coil on my F2 because I have not had much time with it and I was walking by the picnic shelter on the way to that soccer field hoping to dig up some jewelry.
On one side of the picnic shelter is a large mound of dirt that has some trees and grass and I was just swinging as I was walking over this thing.
I got a zinc signal and hoped for a large gold ring but expected some can slaw and this thing popped up instead.
Only about an inch and a half deep, at first I thought it was just a modern coat button but I did see the outline of a shield through the dirt and then spied the shank when I turned it over.
Interesting, and I had a thought it might be old but I just threw it in my pocket and forgot about it.
When I got home I did some research and was floored when I discovered this is an officer's coat cuff button from the civil war era...and is from the militia in NEW YORK!
How it got here and was dropped in Kansas I have no idea...but I will take it.
In researching this I discovered there were many of these made from before the civil war, during and then after by several different companies and I am soaking and attempting to clean the back off a little better to see the exact words so I can date it more accurately.
I have a feeling it might be from the civil war years or before but we will see.
I had planned to get out of my jewelry hunting mode and my modern parks this year, do some research on other sites and make an effort to find older coins and maybe some relics this year.
Little did I know I would find something cool like this when I wasn't even planning on, or expecting it.
