A stroll in the mine nets the loot!................

Gulf Hunter

Active member
Went for a solo spin in the mine, with the Excal last night. Water temps are in the high 70s, so I'm starting to wear the wetsuit. You yanks are probably laughing, but hey this Reb gits cold after a 4-8 hour hunt at night! This was only my 4th hunt this month, as the conditions have been less than satisfactory, in my opinion. Was in the water by 620P, late for the 448P 0.6L and SSE winds at 10-15 and later increased to 15-20. We have a front coming in on monday and it's sucking gulf moisture inshore now. Things started a little slow, but was into lead and coins, so I just kept at it. Nickel count was exceptional, at 11. Total clad count was $2.41. Also recovered a knife and a gold plated ladies stainless Citizen watch, that was way down. Had to dive down and fan out the whole and grope for it. Reckon it was worth it?

The prize was an unmarked filigree style band, w/elephant patterns. I acid tested the ring and it holds 10K & 14K. Had to fan and grope for this one, as well and when I got my fingers on it, was REALLY EXCITED to get it back to the surface for a look (zero visibility here). Quite an enjoyable hunt and I baled at 1115P and it sanded up pretty bad, as the tide was really coming in hard.

G.H. my wife has a ring just like that one, she got it on a trip to Africa, when she got home she had it tested because it was not marked and the place she bought it from told her it was 14k, and sure enough it was. You were very busy from the looks of the nut you posted. I still wish lead was worth something, we all could get rich. HH

NIce ring. Been meaning to ask you...Do you hunt in disc mode or pinpoint all metel? I got CJC book and have been trying it out in pinpoint which seems to work well.

Paul, I used to run Pinpoint, but have found with the Threshold lowered to NOT aubidle, I am able to hear blips and whispers in Disc, that cannot be picked up in Pinpoint. It is just amazing how well it works. Really absorb what cjc has written, a wealth of information there. Now cjc does mention Pinpoint/all metal, in light salt and fresh water performing up to 30% deeper, but I have not found that to be the case here, even though my salt water would be considered, "light salt" by comparison to the oceans. Hope this helps.

Well Joe, I am not sure how reliable my acid tests are, but it does in fact pass the 14K test. Was lighter than the 10K test, but did not eat it completely away. That lead deal is just amazing to me too, but there's bound to be some way to sell them and profit. I usually just fill a Folger's coffee can and give them all to the scrap metal guys that come by the shop, at least they can get something for them and I still make the environment smile! Thanks for the info.

I know you have to work ten times harder than I do .. so my hats off to ya..Nice one GH:thumbup:

Remember I don't have to fight the current, surf, crowds, or the wind...Most nights not even a ripple on the water..

Good luck next spin
