A spur of the moment trip over to Leon Creek today on the old Melton Ranch...........

After making a trip out to Castroville, Texas to see my cousin, I decided to take the long way home and fish for an hour or two on Leon Creek on the Melton Ranch. For some reason, lately I have been wanting a good catfish dinner and I figured I would catch a couple for Debbie to cook. It was not to be, only caught one catfish and decided to turn him loose. It was not a wasted trip because I gathered up a bucket full of large acorns for Heather to use in her class for decorations or maybe a project for the kids in her class.

As I pulled into my driveway, a neighbor boy by the name of Carlos saw me unloading the fishing rod and bucket of acorns. He pestered me until I gave him one of the large acorns. I came into the house, poured myself a cup of coffee, and went out back to sit on the deck to relax and play with my dog. I was not out there five minutes when Debbie told me that some boys were out front of the house and wanted to visit with me.

I walked out front and within ten seconds knew what they wanted...they all wanted one of those big acorns like the one that I gave Carlos. I think that half the time, those boys spend more time at my house than their own house. I finally struck a deal with them, if they would return the things that they have borrowed from me, I would give them each one large acorn. Eric, asked me what I would tell Heather about not getting very many acorns. I said that I will not tell her anything, and that I would drive back out there tomorrow and get some more. I told them to go home and get my stuff and pick up their acorn.

Eric returned my poly rope, Tyler returned a rod and reel that I had lent him, Brad returned a rod and reel, Nick returned the pup tent minus the poles that he said he lost, Alex returned my good metal flashlight with used up batteries, and Jesse returned a thermos that he had borrowed last April. I had just finished giving out the last acorn when Little John came down the street pulling a red wagon containing my four large horse shoes that went with the set that we use every Fourth of July.

I thought I was through with them now that each had a large acorn, but that was not going to happen. It now appears that they want to go with me to get the acorns tomorrow, and get some for themselves at the same time. I called Heather to see if I could borrow their Yukon tomorrow so that I could take all the boys out to the Melton Ranch. Now her and Brayden are going too! I told everyone to be at my house at 8:30 AM. Also, Tyler re-borrowed the rod and reel, and Jesse wanted to borrow the thermos again.

As I was just reaching the front porch to go inside to eat dinner, Carlos wanted to know if I would come back out after dinner and watch them play soccer in my front yard. I said that I would come back out, but the soccer game was going to be played in the street. I guess I will not be spending a quiet evening sitting out back watching the sun go down. PS: Here is a picture of the acorn...how many can I.D. the tree that the acorn came from? I placed a quarter down in front of it to give you an indication of the size. Please be advised that I do know the type of tree that the acorn came from. Kelley (Texas) :)

Are they from a Bur Oak?
I think those neighbor kids value you more than you know, i bet it keeps their mothers from making them into girly boys;) Would those acorns work in a slingshot?

Thanks for the neat post:thumbup:

They are good kids and we enjoy them. They love to be told ghost stories, and cowboy stories. Kelley (Texas) :)

Most of the folks down here do not have them around their homes because you best not run over one with the lawn mower...like hitting a golf ball. Kelley (Texas) :)

get down south, I am gonna keep my eyes open for a couple of those guys. Nice Nut for sure. look good on the coffee table up here :D

find some neat things to do with them. Million 's of red oaks acorns dropping here. Sounds like someone tossing rocks on the roof.
Turkeys come in each morning and eat as many as they can. Find with me like walking on marbles out there.... They could not swallow those those you have. First one I ever saw.
