A spoony hunt!

Some days bring the goods, some days bring the spoons!...Today was a pretty Spoony morning..real cold, teens, Full moon setting in the west, my waders in the trunk of Rosie were frozen in the rolled down position, I sure wish I had brought them into the house last night..I left Rosie running and pumped the exhaust into the waders to thaw them out enough to put them on... that steep sand slope down into the Big Lake was a sheet of ice, dry sand was frozen solid like concrete. No way to recover a target there without a pick..

Well, I took great care to commit to going down that slope and into the water, I knew a guy could not fool around, he just had to go for it or risk a slip and fall into the Lake busting his @ss and potentially his rig if he was too trepidacious, getting back out was another matter, a fellow has to throw scoops of wet sand up on the ice and build a little ramp for traction. ...the wind was out of the East, Lake was fairly flat..I could see yesterdays wind really blew it out to the hardpan, nails were laying there on the bottom...Perfect! The surface of the Big Lake was spackled with ice crystals, like floating shards of glass...got this mess and a few wheaties, lotta nickels again, but nothing good to report for the effort, 3hrs in leaky waders working the exposed hardpan...

I saw a duck hunter out on the Big water...He had an unusual tactic...he would race his boat right into a squadron of migrating birds and flush them and a guy on board would blast away as they tried to gain speed and altitude!...very effective and easy method from the looks of it...who needs decoys and a call when you got a fast boat? Hope y'all got out and found something....I gotta rake leaves this afternoon...
Mud

You are one tough hombre, Mud. Nice pile of loot. There is going to be gold and silver coming your way, I just know it. HH jim tn

Mud, you are hard core. I'd be proud of a day like that myself. Got frustrated the other day with my scoop and my foot slipped and tore a hole in my waders and it didn't take me long to decide detecting with a boot full of cold water wasn't getting it. And it was about 59 degrees air temp and no ice in the water, but I'm just an old softy. The worse thing about it was I was getting a quarter signal and the sand kept filling in faster than I could retrieve it. Went back next day and took my wetsuit and it was a sardine top with the key and kept getting the signal and it was the sardine box itself. Sounded just like a quarter on the At/Pro and I couldn't recover the doggone thing no matter how I tried to wiggle the coil or pinpoint. I let something personal frustrate me that day and ended up putting a hole in my waders. Lesson learned. Put all your cares away when you are detecting. HH.
Nice spoon ring, John.

YA got a few keepers. Wether or not you score your post are always a treasure to us. :twodetecting: Your determination and on the spot resourcefulness are core to the most passionate persuits a man can have. :super: In other words detecting is for crazy people like us!!!:buds:
Keep it coming!

Mud you always find some really good stuff and lots of coins even in nasty weather. I've been slipping hot chocolate looking out the window. :)

Wish I could find that wading on a warm day. I don't get a lot of spoons, but my cycles run, keys and match box toys. Found a real nice lock other day, no key of course.
Ever get those waders patched?

I bet you would have been a good pirate, Mud. Always after the booty. The more you go, the better your chances. And you sure don't mind going, lol. So, with all that knowledge I just laid on you, I just KNOW you are a mere smidgeon away from being rewarded nicely! Keep up the good work!
And that duck hunter would be in BIG trouble doing that here in Texas. It's against the law to shoot from a moving boat. Oh, and I'm gonna start hunting those dang coyotes soon. They've really been mocking me here lately. I had 2 of them in the front yard howling, and it sounded like a 10 dog pack! I swear, I don't see how in the heck they do that. Saw 3 this morning chowing down on a feral hog that somebody shot. I would have had a perfect shot on one of them. I'll be setting some snares out after the first of the year...I hope.
