a solid reading?

Aussie MXT

G'day all,

I've got 2 questions for you.

I've been told that most gold gives a solid reading. I've had many targets that give a particular reading and then when I get the coil a little bit closer, the reading is some thing totally different.
When they say a 'solid reading' does that mean that the vdi stays the same?

Q 2.:

The other day I was digging targets in my back yard and my target was only giving a slight change in pitch I had several handfuls of dirt over the coil with nothing then I had a handfull of dirt with the signal. While trying to isolate the target I ended up ditching all the dirt and it was my hand that was causing the pitch to change. It wasn't doing this before I grabbed that last handfull of dirt. Is this a ground balance problem or something in the soil which then got onto my hands. I can't explain it.

Any help would be appreciated

I don't get solid readings on raw gold unless its a big nugget, most of the time it jumps around due to the different alloys in the gold and ground. gold will read from -15 to + 80 so I hunt by the zip zip sound if its a solid zip zip I dig if it grunts I keep swinging...............:detecting:

You might need to lay off the Greens, it sounds like you have to much iron in your blood........................................

How about if I say a solid, repeatable response. I might also say a tight, repeatable visual TID, but to me, those are two different things. For me, it is always the audio response that should get my attention and the one by which I make all other decisions. I might, and often do, refer to the visual display to confirm my suspicions about a target's worthiness to recover, or to get an idea of what it might be. But in the end, I am usually[/]u listening for a solid repeatable AUDIO response/reading.

As for most gold giving a solid reading, I will say most gold in the form of a decent sized nugget might give a solid repeatable reading, depending upon the nugget's depth and position and size, and the coil used as well as the search mode. I've located gold that was quite small and lacked a good visual reading, but the audio response was generally repeatable.

You're apparently one 'salty' dude! Were you using the Auto-Trac feature of was the GB 'locked'?

It's possible that you hadn't noticed anything until you got to the last handful and your hand was positioned closer to the coil. Not likely something you "picked up from the soil" as all the soil would have done that. Depending upon the model used, the set tuning, and the position of you hand and proximity to the coil, some people might have more salts i their system and that can be 'read' or disrupt the field enough to respond to it.

Aharrr! as as the pirates say. I am a salty dog!!! and I don't like greens. (green frogs are ok) (and so is the lettuce on my Big Mac) lol I had auto track locked, I just tried it again tonight. and yes its just my hand when its passing right next to the coil. Not a clear signal but it causes a distinct wavering of the threshold.

Doing tests on small nuggets found by my friends I need to be listening for a slight variation in the noise which most of the time is not close enough to give me a vdi. I need more practice I suppose so I guess I'll just keep on digging everything unless its a grunt. I am using the 6x10 eliptical coil. I've just recieved my 15 x 18 inch SEF coil so I'll let you know how that goes.

Thanks ....
