A simple question..

Being an experienced detectorists asking questions about my new puppy the Explorer seems strange. But here is a starter one...Do you experienced fellows hunt in the digital mode and switch over to the smartscreen for further clarification or vice versa....Do expect more in the near future...Got a good start in the starting mode and time to move on to the various facets...

Personally I never use digital mode, I go by combo of smart screen/audio tone and tone quality.. after a while the tone quality will be a dead giveaway to a good target.. by the way I would suggest going right into advanced mode.. even if you wish to use patterns.. when you get into advanced mode you can change the tone variabilty up to max, which helps differentiate good targets.. I use normal response to get the least fluctuating audio.. most good targets will give a solid single tone from all directions, where trash will most times read up and down warbly tones..
If you go into advanced mode and want to use disc, just hit the select screen, press clear and then scroll down the list to reject crown caps etc.. I would not reject screw caps or pulltabs if your hunting sites that might have indians, half dimes, 3 cent pieces etc.. listen for the quiet solid toned hits

I really like audio 1.It seems like I am about the only one though. And I do max out my Varibility and my limits. It sounds funky and is hard to get used to,but now that I am used to it,Normal audio really throws me off!
I always use the Smartfind screen.Once in a while I will switch over to digital to check an iffy, but still do not go by it alone. The tone quality like Jim was talking about is what I go after.I have watched my buddy pull a Barber Half that was reading 31 in Digital. There was iron in the hole with it,but still, someone using Digital alone would have left it.

I never use digital mode and suspect that I never will as it doesn't provide enough useful information. I work strictly by ear until I have a good tone, and then I check the meter.
I am using audio 2. I had used audio 1 for almost a month, but discovered that audio 2 makes sounds that make a lot more sense to me in combination with a FAST recovery mode. I continue to use audio 1 with DEEP recovery mode. I suspect that this more a matter of personal preference than hard and fast rules.
I would encourage you to experiment with the audio modes at some point. The different response audio modes can help you out in trash.

Hi Tim, What is the difference between Audio 1 and Audio 2? I have tried to use Audio 1 on several occasions and it sounds like I am going over an aluminum can. There is a loud twaaang on every hit. It would probably be good is there were only deep targets and no trash.

Audio 2 seems to get louder as the target comes under the coil. The audio mode works very well for me in FAST mode.
Audio 1 in FAST mode is really "poppy," with the sound being too fast for me to follow. Besides being extremely annoying, it makes it hard for me to figure out where anything is located in the ground.
Audio 2 and FAST seem to work together and I can easily make sense of what I am hearing and what you hear matches what is happening under the coil. The sounds tend to whine and work up and down the scales - it makes it easier to pick up a faint target and get centered over it.
When you hear it whine on an upscale and then abruptly chop to a low or null sound, you are hearing either some iron falsing or the sound of a coin (or other conductive target) near iron. It is not uncommon for you to only get the edge of the coil over the good target before the bad target pops in. So if you dig a plug and cannot find a coin, always dig toward the point of the cut off sound.
If you want to try it, I recommend you do a few air tests with it before you hit the turf. Be sure to run some iron under there - you will want to hear what it is doing when both a good and bad target go under the coil.
I should also note that I am using FERROUS sounds. And that you will get more false sounds and bad target id's in fast mode - just trust your ears and plan on digging.
I also recommend using a modest amount of sensativity when using this for the first time. I have been working at 24 sens and I have been recovering plenty of coins, all of them hard ones to find. If you go upwards, you can expect to get fooled more often by junk targets.

HI DAN, MOST OF THE TIME ILL USE THE SMARTFIND SCREEN BECAUSE IT LETS ME KNOW FOR SHOULD WHAT IM OVER. MOVING THE COIL REAL SLOW OVER MY TARGET WILL TELL ME IF ITS A SOLID TONE OR IF THERE SOME WARBLE TO IT.
WAS OUT SUNDAY AND UST LOOKING FOR CLADS UNDER SOME BLEACHERS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND STAYED IN DIGITAL THE WHOLE TIME . I DID FIND 2 ROSIES THER WHICH SURPRIZED ME BUT I DID WALK OUT OF THERE WITH 23.65 IN CHANGE.
BUT WHEN HUNTING SOME OLD SITES ITS BEST TO USE THE SMARTFIND SCREEN.
HOPE THIS HELPS,
STAN SJMDC

Thanks Tim,
I can hardly waite to get back out and give it a try. The book read that you should not go to the advanced Audio Modes untill you were more experienced, but it sounds like I am going to like this mode. I will let you know how I do.

Really strange to get some good answers or for that matter any. Seems like a different breed lives in this forum..Always start slow with a new unit and can see already a keen ear is the key to this unit, have bad hearing but good tone ID so
expect lots from the Explorer XS....
