How deep were ? could be possiable fill dirt from anothger site brought in but dont know how old the park is your searching just a thought
 
...Looks like you found the Shooting Range of an old military camp/fort....do not be concerned that it is in the middle of the inner city......75 to 100 years ago this site was probably on the outskirts of town....good work....I really like the large shell that you found intact....what caliber is that??......Joe
