a short trip to Waikiki

Aloha all,

Just returned from a quick 4 day trip to Oahu. First morning out 30 minutes into searching I found a 10K band. That got me going. Unfortunately after that it went downhill. Next morning I thought I had a silver toe ring, but was just junk. Day 3 I hit haunauma bay. Rules there restrict you to dry sand. Just junk and coin. Last morning I get out early. The doorman tells me the beach is hit hard. Everyday I see at least a few people out. Not feeling lucky as the tide is high so I hit the dry sand. My big score was a pocket spill of several dollars. The real excitement was on my way back to the hotel. I see a frantic man pointing while talking to a water hunter with a minelab. I stop to talk to him. The day before he lost his 22k, 5 diamond wedding ring and he had a good idea where it was at. Both he and I were leaving that day. I'm pretty sure the minelab guy could find it. For the tourist's sake I hope so. I would have been nice to have found something like that.

I felt kind of like it was a bust, but then again, I do have a nice souvenir. If I travel again, I am going to get a nice travel scoop. That was a real limiting factor. That and it was a family vacation so I had other commitments. Actually, truth is, I can't handle more than 2-3 hours a day anyway so the family stuff didn't get in the way much. But the water scoop was missed badly.

Took a bit to tune the ATX. I'm not used to EMI. Seemed like a lot. I also had to use 4-5 disc and around 6 on the sens. It was a learning experience. BTW, I guarantee Haunauma Bay is loaded just cause it is off limits. Millions of visitors! And those Waikiki hunters have it good too, but you won't catch me living there. When I make it back I will be better prepared.

Tally: $6.50 in change, some chinese coin, junk toe ring, 10K men's band, and of course the usual bobby pins, bottle caps and other junk. Let's not forget beautiful sunrises and the good looking women out for morning exercises.

ps. doorman (who was a football ref) told me a story of how a coach was in pregame talk with team and moved his arms and lost his superbowl ring. All players got in hands and knees but the ring was never found! I never want to be a dirt digger unless looking for nuggets, but this may change my mind.

You had fun, got some loot and a gold ring where locals probably hunt that area to death. I hear the wet sand is highly mineralized volcanic sand mixture.

Waikiki 1978: Medical meeting and I took my trusty Garrett vlf DeepSeeker. Had an ocean side room high up on one of the biggies and had a wakeup call for 4am,to get ahead of any locals. When the call came I stepped out on the balcony and looked down on the beach, which is well lighted by all the hotel lights, there was at least 6/7 detectorist that I could see in the front of my hotel. I didn't even go out, just went down and got coffee and talked to the doorman. He had a good laugh and told me that some of the guys showed up at 2am.
I did manage to get on Ford Island,a Marine base, and hunt along the waterline right behind the AZ and the rest of battleship row.Thats another story, but if you are on a military base just look very official and you can operate with ease.
