Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured across the Atlantic Ocean, in England.
In fact, the great ocean liner, HMS Titanic, was carrying 12,000 gallon jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its initial stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, were eagerly awaiting its anticipated delivery. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Vera Cruz and, indeed, all of Mexico, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that the government declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.
As we all now know, the National Day of Mourning still being observed each year on May 5th and is now better known as: Sinko de Mayo.
.
And now you know the REST of the story!

.
...lately, though, I've even heard conspiracy theories that it was actually sabotage...
...by the peoples of Minnesota and Wisconsin, because the ship wouldn't berth in Duluth!
