A Roman silver day . . .

Welsh Neil

New member
We met at around 8:45am ish somewhere in deepest, darkest Wales - the kind of place where the men are men and the sheep are scared (they should be seeing John in his wellies! )

We are both armed with Explorer II's with a Muskie as a back up. Anyway we hit the pastures after a brief walk around and decide to grid the areas. Johns is at the top of the field and I am at the bottom. I had found about 3 lead signals when I unearth a copper alloy object withh 3 holes in the bottom - reminds me of the base of a seal box. Any suggestions? I look up to tell John, but he's already upon me and is grinning from ear to ear as he is holding a Denarius in his hand - one nil to John! Looks like its going to be a good day!

Next item falls to me and its my first denarius ever! I had only been bemoaning my lack of Roman silver earlier in the day, so it was a great feeling to unearth one, that feeling will always be there! Looks like its Roman Republican Denarius of Trebanius - Head of Rome 135BC! So thats approximately 2,143 years old! [attachment 113791 RomandenariusNumber1231208.JPG]

Next signal, and oh my god its a votive offering of a man minus his legs. Could be Roman, Celtic or even Iron age! Found a couple of feet (excuse the pun) from the Denari. I rush 100 meters+ to show John who by now is muttering something about "I'm the teacher - your the pupil! Not the other way around!"

Return to my grid and then about 30 foot from Johns bag I pull out a couple of grots (I can call them that now) and then yet another Roman Republican Denari of T carisius 46BC! Whats going on - none in 2.5+ years then two in a day (and they say you never find anything in Wales!) 2-1 to me!!!! This one is also a tad odd looking! I am trying to find what it is at the mo.

John then redemes himself with a really beautiful Disc Brooch - with an unusual fitting. Lovely find and intricatly carved. I find a bronze ring - another grot and lots of other bronze items. I also stumble across a lump of encrusted metal that is giving me a Denarius signal - I test it in front of John and we both agree - there's something in it, that is not ferous. Its sat on my kitchen table at the moment - more on that in a later post!

I pull a broken brooch out, and once again John is upon me (he's like a ghost!) holding yet another Denari! He gave it a clean a bit later and the reverse is outstanding! Well done mate - really pleased for you! Cracking find.

The scores 2-2 and we are entering injury time as the darkness is creeping up on us! And that is where it ends OR does it - as I still have the lump of mystery to open! Time to get my dremmel out - more on this later!

In the Denari photo the ones on the left are my finds, and the ones on the right Johns.

I get home about 7ish - shattered, but more than happy!

Its been a great detecting end of the year for me!

Happy Christmas one and all

P.S. To round up, last night I was lieing in bed with the wife and said " Do you know what, I have a really good feeling about tomorrow - I think I'll find something decent." she looked at me with the look only a wife can give. As if to say "how many times have I heard that?" Looks like I was right for once.

2143 years old. I can't even fathom that. That Roman denarius is stunning. The chariot scene makes me think of Ben Hur. Those are terrific finds Neil, you must be feeling pretty good right about now! :clapping:

That is AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the thing about you guys over there. the history is a lot deeper and you have a wealth of older coins & relics. Nice coins, thanks for posting the pics. The coins are beautiful

Amazing to think how old this stuff is!
You must be on cloud nine finding artifacts as old as that... definitely museum quality stuff.
Please post more as you recover the ancient past.

Tks for sharing my Son was also amazed at your collection!

I would not mind going over there for a week straight out and just pound some places and see what I could get.

Cool Finds!! :beers:

Why are the poor little sheep scared of you guys?

hehehe.....are the wives jealous?.......

and we here in the states rant and rave about a 300 yr old coin.......hahaha....does BC stand BeforeChrist.....

Holy Cow!.....I mean Sheep....

Hi Mattockman - its a centuries old joke in Wales about our romantic involvement with our sheep - normally made by the English! The sheep heavily outnumber us as a race by about a million or so! And you are right BC is abbreviated to Before Christ - pretty early coins.

Thanks to everyone for their replies - I am heading back there on New Years Eve - so I will post my finds for you all to see. My partner has already been back and hit another two Roman silver coins - I think we have stumbled upon a major roman camp! the amount of ifnds is rediculous for South Wales. I'll keep you all updated. More finds can be seen at www.DetectingWales.com

I never post on the Relic section now as no one bothers replying - so from now on here is where you will see the finds from Wales!

Fe godwn ni eto (We shall rise again in Welsh)

Happy New Year
Neil

Glad you like them. I have found a few Stone Age scrapers and fossils as well that go back literally millions of year - you never know waht will come out with the next spade full! I love finding Roman stuff though as the quality is so advanced for 2000 years. The current coins in circulation these days last about 10 years in the soil before being illedgible - makes you think where society is going!

Cheers
Neil

As a collector of Roman coins ,I'm green with envy at what you guys can find over there, that is sweet OLD silver!Since the Romans did'nt get to So. Wales until after 50AD,your older Republican silver was in circulation for near 200 yrs. if it was dropped by a Roman.Maybe it was a trade site.In the 150 years before the roman conquest ,a lot of Roman silver went over via trade.

Thanks Tom - you are spot on with your Roman/Welsh history - wel done. The location of the finds is about 25 minutes from the garrison at Caerleon - which was the second largest in the UK with 9,OOO legionnaires. To say this site is a tad special would be an understatement. I will post another update soon, but we have to be sensible on this one as too much activity and finds would get the site closed down!

Happy New Year one and all

Neil

Wow, I can't imagine the feeling after finding something that beautiful. Thanks for the pics!
