A real Pirate, or just pretty sharp?

Dancer

Well-known member
A guy who used to do a lot of water hunting. (76)now. Seen me at the Tiki bar down by the lake. Giving me a few tips. Here's one. About once a year, he would run a ad in the found section.
Found, one gold ring. He'd give name of the lake. If someone called, he'd ask what beach lost, water or sand ? He said "You know Dancer, I never had the one they were looking for". But I got some real good leads" Took a second, had to laugh. Only thing I could say was, " Tonya, fill this man's glass"! Arrr !

Smart.... but honest? I have issues with some near me who watch the paper or CL.... not to make a return if they find them but to locate and keep them. I know of hunters who have gotten the info and been out there with me looking.... only to tell me later they found it and sold it. I leave it to the finder..... not my call and I dont rat them out. Its just not me if I know who it is.... its really hard for me not to give it back. BUT.... im not posting or advertising what I find on CL either.... thats kind of my moral line

They run an ad like that weekly here on CL.. Hard to believe that people fall for it. It's "fishing"....Headline reads: "I found your ring at the beach", then goes on to ask, tell me where, when, what beach, sand or water, and I'll return it to you if its yours....Thanks for the info, but I didn't find it,.......Yea, Right!!
I do post an ad on CL to offer help to find lost jewelry, but would not post a found ring on CL,.. if I did see an item being posted as lost I would have no problem returning it or help find it no matter what the value. It's a shame that there are hunters that see a lost posting for a ring they found,( I'm referring to a fresh drop) or are afraid to even post it on the forum because ( they admit this in their post) the person who lost it might see it...Wow!!..... Not anyone I would want to know, be around or let in my house!!
As for the "Pirate" moniker....cute, but just self justification for being a "finders Keepers" or to put it bluntly, If you know who lost it and won't return it, a thief.

Soooooo bob....like I said i have my limits. Here in Fl a good many finds are recent drops.... sorry but I dont post um any more just because of that. I give several back each year.... that works for me and the hobby. Im also sorry you wouldnt wat to know some one like me. This late in life I do what makes me happy and im ok with me.

Sorry Dew..I was not referring to you in any way. I understood your post to be on the positive side from what you wrote and in no way was answering your post back.
> It was directed at misleading ads posted on CL to gain peoples trust so they can go find some ones lost ring, and because they don't plan on returning it, they claim to be a pirate to make it OK........

LOL...... NP Bob.... high 5 to your comment. Its all good buddy. This is however a subject you get a lot of different opinions on. I honestly dont mind giving a ring back...... but ive run into some that really makes you wonder why i did.

The Old Pirate I was talking to is pretty well known around the lake. He has helped just about all the Marinas, and many boaters find things that went over the side. Sometimes he was taken care of, sometimes no. Hunted a ML Excalibur when I met him. He also scuba dived, for Treasure, also explored old sites for silver/ relics. He has pointed things out to me in the past, but as far as his secret, secret spots, well you know. And I don't blame him. He gets along on a small pension, plus soc. Best thing about him, is his humor. One of his stories. He returned a HS ring, been lost 8 yrs. Owner was a pretty big girl, happy as can be. Gave him a huge Bear Hug. That's it.. Best part she put a hurtin on him couldn't hunt for a week ! He still shows up around happy hour sometimes.
My original post is my fault for not making the humor clear. Our "Pirate" is a rare one, just making his way. And still gets his glass filled around the Lake.

Very creative way to locate a potential good hunting area!...We all have to be a bit of a Pirate. As detectorists, the dreams of treasure and adventure is what gets us up and out...I like this old guy!

I'd buy him beer and listen to his stories all day long!....I hope my future mimics his...a small pension, free drinks, detecting, telling stories about my Life to an interested audience besides myself..:lmfao::buds:.

Good one Dancer! tell us some more stories about him when you can...what was his biggest dollar score, heaviest ring, near death experience??

Nothing like an old storie teller. Im getting there i guess since im a talker and enjoy a good get to gether with detecting buddies. Ive even got the small pension and have managed to avoid work and enjoy beach life here in Fl. Does it really get much better than this? Some of the guys can really tell some stories and knows a lot about the area having grown up here. Old people can be the best sorce of research.
