A real beginner needing help

[size=large]I am an older grandma who wants to get the grand-kids involved in more outdoor, wholesome activities. Don't want to be impulsive and just go out and buy an MD and then hate myself for not investing a few more bucks and really getting what I want, that I will never want another one for a very long time.

I have read so many forums, viewed so many websites and just when I think I am narrowing my selection down I find myself right back at the beginning on WHICH ONE is the best for MY individual needs for the least amount of sizable funds spent.

I am interested in gold hunting since I live in Nevada and close to all the upper California areas that still mine for gold, so waterproof for a few feet deep would be awesome. But those trips will be the occasional trip to gold detect, but I would like to regularly get out here locally to parks and such to coin hunt.

So, here I go again, GREAT forums, finding GREAT comments and love and have watched the videos think one unit is nice, then I see people saying don't spend that kind of money instead get a xxxxx. I didn't even know what VDI was until weeks later I heard someone use it in the video and said THAT'S WHAT THAT MEANS.

Please HELP please, someone wanted to sell me a radio shack unit for a hundred bucks but I thought why do that unless it will do what I want it to? I would rather add two-three-four-five to it and get something I will be happy with for a long time.

Minelab?
Whites?
Fisher?

When I do read some of the pros and cons, not sure if I am reading some salesman pitching his product instead of good honest opinions from people using them.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Lou,

You mentioned two completely different types of detecting you want to do ... nugget hunting and coin shooting. One detector that ranks high in both those types of hunting and also in relic hunting is the versatile White

Get a Fisher F2 or an ACE 250 to start out with. You are correct there is a TREMENDOUS amount of Hype. You get what you pay for with detectors, it does not matter if you get a White's V3 or a yard sale toy, you are going to dig junk. This is just part of it, don't get discouraged. You may dig 1000 pulltabs out of the ground before you find anything of any real monetary value.

Prospecting is a whole different animal. We will address that one later.

Hunt your local park and see if the hobby is for you, and how the kids respond to it.

If you get bitten by the bug and love the hobby, there are a bunch of detectors that will do the trick.

Either way, if you want to upgrade or get out of it, the Ace 250 or the Fisher F2 have a great resale value.

I would recommend you get in contact with your local club, attend a meeting. There should be someone there that can guide you, sell you a used detector, heck they may even give you one.

Do a lot of reading, and research. There are quite a few good videos on Youtube to help you get the hang of it.

Also, ALWAYS fill your holes. NO MATTER WHAT.

Good luck, and please get back to us with your progress.

Simple is not always the worst bet! I started my family/ &/brothers and children /now nephew on Radio Shack 1000' s/EFFECTIVE!! (cheap to try) / it's a bounty hunter tracker IV (look at metectorreveiw.com for the bh tracker IV) / cheaper & works on sound/ use's the same parts. Now I use upper end detectors most are sound only as well. I found a ton of stuff with that radio shack 1000( $50-$70) and it will give you the basic's of detecting at a decent entry level . The Ace 250 ($212 new) (about the same used/maybe a little less) is a great unit as well if you want a digital unit. Check out the reveiw site ! good digging!! gottit!!!!!
