A quick question

I am in the market for a Tesoro Vaquero or Tejon, just depends on which one I can get cheaper (used). I have never had one and currently have a F5 but I can't get over the fact it only registers a dime on the VDI if it is 4" or less above that it gets funky and the numbers dive low to the point I don't dig. I think I am missing some good deep target because of my reliance on the VDI to dig or not to dig. IF I took the time to pinpoint every target 60 and down to say 50 and they were at 5+ inches I may pick up some better targets, but I don't really want to or I would be pinpointing all day.

So my question is this, I have watched a bunch of you tube videos from 53 silver and others and have heard you have to "listen to the sound" but in all honesty I just hear a beep. Now it is a very good solid beep, where "junk" (possibly as they never dig it up so I don't know) kind of comes and goes or crackles, but is there actually a difference in a "coin beep" that tells you it is a coin or that it is junk? Some people say listen for the whispers on deep coins but they sound like the junk signals and since there is no depth indication how do you decipher a junk shallow target from a deep coin beep? Is my learning curve going to be too great to learn this detector? I read some bad reviews and I think that is the case on almost all of them, I don't want to be disappointed. I am up for a challenge I guess.

I love the depth you guys are getting and want to get that deep as well so that is why I am interested, I just don't want to buy it and regret it. I dig a lot of junk now even with the VDI because it comes up in number that isn't "normally" a coin, so digging isn't too much of an issue but I have my limits.

I would love to see a F5 display (or any other VDI machine that has a great stable readout regardless of depth on a Tejon platform with that much depth on coins, the thing would rock, wish they made it.

I would think something maybe wrong with your f5 or user error? My f2 has a fixed gb and gets alot more than that with 6x11 dd coil. Maybe gb is incorrect? What type soil you have?

One more thought, much like tesoro, its much deeper in all metal mode. The f5 like my whites lets you use am mode while still able to use the vdi. That is a sweet feature not found in Tesoro. Run in am mode, gain around 80, and thresh around -3 to 0.

As to your original question concerning the single "beep". The different nuances are quite subtle. It takes a fair number of detecting hours before you begin to recognize the small differences. However, once you've reached that level and with practice thumbing the disc knob, you can predict coin versus junk surprisingly well. I didn't believe this at first as I couldn't hear it either, but with time I realized I had started picking up on the tones. This skill is also helpful even with a tid screen as well.

IDX all metal is too crazy to run in around here, being a farming area as well as heavy drinkers, you often find it difficult even to find a location to GB without anything under the grass. I have tried it a few times and the detector is always going off in your ear. I find it easier to notch out tab and below (why I have yet to find a gold ring) to get rid of 75% of the noise. I run in four tone just because high tone is copper pennies and above. I had the F2 and liked it went to the F5 for more customizing, can't say I don't like it but neither of the F's got deep coins and I am sure there has to be more than 4" deep coins of any type around. (not discounting some user error but I feel adept at using it anyway)

I had an F5 and had a lot of fun with it. It was awesome as a clad finder. However I never found a single ring with it, nor any really old coins. That notch is too tempting and made me get lazy by eliminating pull tabs and zinc pennies. When I air tested these settings I found that I was missing small gold and large Canadian cents. That was my last TID machine. Now that I'm back to Tesoro I'm digging good targets again. Maybe it's just me. I don't detect to make money. I detect for the thrill of the hunt. So I don't mind digging.

IDXpro, I believe you are wrong about Tesoro not ID'ing in all metal. I seem to recall that my Cortes did. I would expect that the Deleon does too.

have you tried the F-70 or is it a certain budget you are bound by I would opt for a low kHz like 7.5 or lower for silver coins to me tesoro machines are average on silver , somthing like the x terrara 705 would I think be good or an E track I would recommend blisstool but you will dig foil and deep at that . tesoroes disc dial is very actuate tho and i can see finding a dime as deep as 7" and in my badd mineralized ground 5" and i dont have one of the deeper models

I'm sure you are correct Dan. Didn't think of those two. My bad.

The Cortes is a fine machine, and does a great job. However, if it's a TID machine you must have, then I think at that price point there are more feature rich alternatives.

I love Tesoro's and have a number of them.
But, if your looking for deep coins, a used Fisher CZ is hard to beat for deep coins.
While your at it, you will find all the Buffs and V nickles, other cherry pickers left behind..

Tico, I was looking for a CZ they don't seem to come up often, I would really like a 6a has great depth, depth meter, and display. From what I have heard the Tejon and Vaquero are great on depth as well and come up more frequently that is why I kind of switched gears. Don't get me wrong I don't mind digging and as other posts here have stated there are nuances in the signal of the Tesoros so that is a plus, I just must not have heard them on the videos which make sense. If I find much of anything of value they have been a few silver coins and two silver rings, all those including the clad have been 4" or less that is why I just feel that I am missing depth on the F5. It is a great detector and I will probably keep it as well as it is a great detector and dead on with the VDI just not if the target is too deep. I think the Tesoro is going to MAKE me dig those deep solid targets and not rely so much on the VDI to tell me to dig. I probably got lazy too to be honest.

I appreciate all your input on this line of detectors it has helped me.

Now for the last question for all the Tesoro owners, no matter what model you currently have, if given the opportunity to switch models from what you have if your goals were the same as mine (moderate soil, established in 1865 or later, hunting clad and silver, and wanting to get these targets at 5-10"), would you change to a Vaquero or Tejon (or insert model here that fits these parameters)? Just want to get a feel what you guys would pick.

Coming from a VDI detector you will find the Tesoro hard at first and dig much more trash. The disc. setting has a lot to do with what you hear. If you have the disc setting higher like past pulltab and hear clicks and pops, these are items or trash that is being partially discriminated out. To me hearing this is good because I can slow the swing speed down real slow, overlap my passes, and pick the coins from the trash others have missed. A display would be jumping all over the dam place and no doubt others have just abanboned these areas out of frustration. Tesoro's excell at target separation and can easily pluck the coins from the trash if you slower down a bit.

With a lower disc. setting like just above foil, items above that setting will give that nice clean sound from both directions to include coins, round trash items and most pulltabs. I set past pulltab and dig most things that give a clean sound from two directions. Most trash, but not all will have the sound broken on the edge or a slight crackle at the end of the sound. Once you learn the clean sound of a coin there is no mistaking it, you just get fooled once in awhile.

Strictly clad and silver, e trac comes to mind but not good in heavy iron ala old foundations. With that said, the still very underated Whites M6!!! My buddy runs one and she's fantastic coin shooter with great depth. My Idx is a little better in the iron than the M6 but not as deep. My $.02

I would first do an air test away from EMI's to check for problems with the detector. Since I am headin' out the door to work, I don't have time to digest the commentary here. I do not see any mention as to what size coil you are using. Perhaps you are getting a lot of masking. The 5" sounds like it would be better suited for trashy areas. I've used the 4" hockey puck on my Outlaw. I find I'm using the 5.75 way more often though.
Just want you to eliminate all of the possibilities BEFORE buying a Tesoro, then experience the same problem(S).

I found the Tejon with the 5.75 coil to be laser sharp for picking coins out between junk targets. I have a 5.75 coil coming for my Vaquero so I'm anxious to see if I can get that kind of precision from the Vaquero as well.

Personally I wouldn't buy into all the hype of these expensive machines being better. Watch some YouTube videos and see that after the calliope of sounds, they end up digging a crater to find a penny 6" deep. Not truly impressive to me.
