I agree with your observations but I just figure that as technology advances there will be ways to convert. Kind of like 8mm video getting transferred to VCR tapes. To me the advantages and ease of use with digital far outweigh any other issues. I'll bet I've taken more photos of my family in the last year using digital than I have with film for my whole life. And isn't that what photography is about for most of us? Recording friends, family, and special moments so that we can share them with others or relive them at some time in the future. I love digital and I'll never use film again.
PS want to buy a nice Minolta X-700 real cheap? <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
 
Using an Epson 2200 printer plus the correct paper and a covering over-spray you can get a picture that will last 142 years.
